Red you should have topped up now get your cheque book out.

Hi, I think the oil level sensor is located in the sump-not sure if it's a sump off job to replace it though?

For the OP - which engine do you have?

For the N52, I don't *think* it's a sump off job but it would certainly be a dump the oil job:

M54...

I'm pretty religious at checking and this car has always prefered having the oil level closer to the full level on the stick than closer to the bottom so when it does the yellow at shut down I'm not too worried. Often short journeys will cause a yellow. But recently it's been at the end of long drives or when (ironically) in driving gently

How do you know the oil level is ok, digital readout on dash or a manual dipstick? Mine (3.0si N52) is digital and gives a warning light when there are no bars or 1 bar... my M3 was a dipstick and would put a light on when just the level was less than half, it might just be a bit 'sensitive' what level do you get when you switch the car off?

I think they slot into the oil sump from underneath with 3 bolts so should be pretty easy to swap out if need be, but you'd definitely want to drop the oil first!

manual dipstick. its about half too. its due an oild change so ill prob just do that and top up to the top of the stick and maintian that. it only gets used for short journeys at the mo if at all ... stark contrast to usually only doing 120miles of motorway

I do not like the digital method with no dip stick at all. I have that on mine. Much rather measure it myself with a dipstick.

If it is half way between minimum and maximum on the dipstick, then that is fine isn't it? Perhaps it is just the sensor that is at fault? Just be wary about trying to fill to the maximum mark as it is easy to overfill and too much oil has its own problems.
