Steel brake pipes, check yours!!

Post by Ducklakeview » Fri Jul 28, 2017 7:57 pm

Ok,

So yesterday I did the brake pipes on Kez's Zed, he had sprung a slight leak on one, where it was covered by the undertray. Upon removal, I was shocked by how bad the rest of the long sections actually were! Slight bending with fingers alone caused them to split in multiple places...

So, keep an eye on the area in front of the NSR wheel as it would appear that crap from the road gets thrown onto them, chips the "protective" coating and starts the rot...

His are all copper now, about 45ft of it!

I can see these giving way under a panic braking situation, they really were that bad.

Thankfully that's why we have mot and advisories to alert folks to get things done, before it's dangerous..
I always worry about the idea on just cleaning them and carrying on from an advisory, but equally I'm sure some are still very safe and a zealous tester.

Did all mine from underneath the covers and all the rear end for safety and peace of mind.

Hey mike - I know copper is more rust resistant, but why don't they come from the factory like that? Is it just down to cost? Sorry if this is a silly question! And most likely will be paying a visit to you in the near future for this and other work haha
Z4 now sold :(

Yes, purely cost. Steel will be less than half the price of copper at least.

Not copper! Kunifer.
Its bursting pressure is at least 50% higher than copper and it's highly corrosion resistant! Ie marine salt water pipes albeit bigger

Most garages who would re pipe the system will use the stuff as a matter of course and it's not expensive.

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.
