Coupe Dilema. What Would You Do?(Update)

Post by MerBrook » Mon Aug 21, 2017 7:58 pm

Hi folks, a year or so ago we traded our coupe in for an Alpina Roadster S Lux, No.169. We also have a 3 series touring as a daily for my wife and I use a pick up for my business. The trouble is that we still have a soft spot for the coupe and are in the fortunate position of being able to purchase one. The Alpina will not be sold and the touring is fairly indespensable for family duties and I can't be without the pickup.
The dilema is should the head rule the heart and say you can only drive one car at any one time etc and therefore 3 cars is too much, or should the heart rule the head and just enjoy them all.
Also if we found that it really was too impractical having the three cars and sell on the coupe would it hold its value or are prices on the way down.(crystal ball gazing I know).

What would you do?

In my opinion If you can run all three then go for it!
Worst case and you do decide to sell the coupe I think they are holding value well. They are also at least three or four thousand more than a roadster with the same spec... I reckon a future classic.

Coupe prices are on the way up, I've been watching the prices rise over the last 12 months so I bit the bullet 6 weeks ago and bought a 58 plate si sport, what a car

Id say right now they are all over the place pricewise & the actual pricepoint a buyer gets in at will always be the guiding factor longterm as to whether it was a good investment  enjoy the cars for what they are

Coupe prices are lower than when I purchased 2 years ago. I could get like-for-like for £500 less now if I chose to buy again.

It's not really about buying a coupe as an investment and more about protecting ourselves to a point should it not work out having the three cars.
I would also agree with Mr.Wilks that after having studied the pricing of coupes for the last few weeks there really doesn't seem to be any real consensus to them and it is almost what ever the seller thinks that is good price wether private or trade.

Well if your not in a rush I would say study the prices I have noticed that the cap prices on a certain trade auction site are increasing on the coupes but not the roadsters

I would sell the Alpina and buy the coupe, then regret having sold the more desirable, more powerful of the two, then sell the coupe and start a hunt for a ///M with less money than if I'd just held onto the Alpina, then buy an M that hadn't had its 1200 mile run-in service, and watch it self-destruct as I drove it away from the dealer/previous owner.
But, that's just my life.
Good luck with whatever you choose. :P

Your quite right Fixit, there is no rush. But we did go to see one on Sunday afternoon which seems to be very good and would be happy to buy, but it doesn't address the main dilemma as to wether it is a good idea etc etc.

Shayne, you forgot to mention the engine bearing shells you would have purchased (but not fitted) before the engine self-destructed :P

Fair enough. The car we saw is a 56 plate sapphire black coupe si sport ,69k, full service history, well looked after with lots of history red leather and piano black. Priced at £9250.00. Being sold by a forum member.
Hope this might help to give a better view.
