N52 Starter motor replacement

Post by Joycey » Tue Aug 22, 2017 8:28 am

Morning all,

Thought I would share my starter motor change. I couldn't find much to go on other that most sites saying you have to remove the manifold to get at it, ridiculous by the way it's very simple. It took me 45 mins to change the motor. Cost £175 from GSF and you get £75 back when you take the old one back. Two ali torx bolts and one nut holding the positive terminal. It is difficult to access as the manifold surrounds the motor but its not impossible just remove the induction system to give you access to the rear/side. Both bolts can be accessed easily at the rear above the bell housing then a 13mm spanner down between the manifolds to loosen the nut.

24/h turn around getting the coupe back on the road is not too shabby. :driving:

Yeah not even a click trying to start. The battery tested ok so I was pretty sure it was that.

Mine sometimes sounds as though it's struggling to start sometimes and then sometimes it's perfect - I wonder if it is on its way out!!

Possible, mine started sounding exactly like that. I thought it was my battery going. Till I got a tester on the battery I then knew it was the starter. It's also the original from 120,000 miles.
