Test drive insurance?
I am looking to buy a Z4 Coupe at some point soon and wonder how to insure myself for a test drive (or two). I am not the policy holder on our family car, just a named driver, and would prefer to be fully comp anyway. Are there schemes out there that would allow me to do this?
Thanks
Thanks

I would recommend that you find out directly from the policy you are currently a named driver for. Ring them and explain the situation, they may ask for a one off payment that will cover you for a fixed period of time (although depending upon your age etc. it could be pricy for fully comp cover on any car)
EDIT: Actually there are companies that specialise in Test Drive insurance - that's probably the way to go, one from RAC:

It all depends on how you intend to buy.
A decent dealer/indie garage (including decent home traders) will have demonstration cover as part of their Motor Trade Insurance Policy. So you will be legally insured to test drive their vehicles through their policy. Private sale and a home trader not doing it in a legit fashion is a different matter however. A good way to tell the difference between a legit operator and someone who isn't is they will have trade plates.

I was assuming the OP's question referred to buying privately.

I have to admit me too, I went back and re-read his post and as he didn't specifically say I thought I would just clarify anyway. Can you tell work has been quiet this morning?!Marlon wrote:I was assuming the OP's question referred to buying privately.

Being a named driver on someone else's policy "normally" doesn't allow you to drive other cars unlike the actual policy holder can, all be it only third party.

Also bizarrely when I was testing cars I found out that because I insured a soft top I was not able to drive other cars with only 3rd party insurance.Russ59 wrote:Being a named driver on someone else's policy "normally" doesn't allow you to drive other cars unlike the actual policy holder can, all be it only third party.
They did amend this though, and I really cannot see any logic behind it.

Thanks for the replies. Early days but looking at private and trade, not ruling anything in or out yet. I'll check the small-print on our current insurance and give them a ring, might be a bit cheaper...

Shame you don't have a policy in your name OP - the sellers of both my Z4s were OK letting me drive it Third Party Only on my Driving Other Cars cover. we never had the conversation, but I expect they would have been thinking it was on the basis of "you bend it, you mend it".
Still nice to see you have already identified the right Z4 to go for!
Hope you find a good one!
