Z4 No10 , , 35i manual / subtle mods + a few wheel changes

Post by mr wilks » Sat Sep 16, 2017 8:33 pm

Whilst a twinturbo Z was inevitable for me the timeframe was brought forward when forum member Rally prised my Imola red ZMR sooner than expected  so the search was on & came mighty close to a deal with 2 forum members selling a 35Is & a 35i 6spd .
For me it wasnt simply that it had to be the 35Is as when remapped both twinturbos hit the same numbers of 360 -380 bhp with little effort .
The Dct was a mild concern only from the point of view that i was trading from a ZMR so still wanted some connection & control .
I was also pretty sure i didn't want adaptive ride so again 35i seemed to edge ahead .
Navspec & toys ? Yea i would have preferred it but as with all my car searches id rather take a low owner , overserviced , low mile minter with low spec over the opposite .
Soooooooo last week bought a 49k 2 owner 2010 Msport 35i 6spd in silver with coral red trim . Last 18months shows invoices for over £4500 spent with new clutch + flywheel , waterpump , 6 injectors + cam sensors , discs-pads all round plus refurbed 326s with fresh runflats ( these are going :D )
Its early days & is taking a little adjusting to from the ZMR on custom backboxes that i never tired of
The 35i is in no way as engaging or connecting to drive as the S54 even with bags more torque but there is something about it that makes me smile :) love the looks , love the colour combo & love the twinturbo poke
Inevitable comparisons are surfacing & i will post a thread with my direct thoughts , i know other members who have had both cars & who do still have both cars so it would be good to see if our thoughts are mirrored .
For now i have a list of "to do's" to make the car mine , namely wheel change , tyre change , some subtle cosmetic tweaks ( new exhaust tips a priority ) & a service to get some Miller's oil in it :P
What i would say at this stage for anyone considering a similar move , yes i the 35Is is the flagship model but don't feel pressured into thinking you are buying a lesser car with the i

A fine looking E89 Mr W, I doubt you'd notice much difference to a 35is.

Your comments on it being a manual will be very interesting coming from an MR and for another time after you've had chance to sample it for a while. Personally at the moment someone would have to prise my cold dead fingers from the MR keys before I'd let mine go so I await with particular interest your thoughts on this E89.

Nice choice Andy.

I love the red leather, and like your choice of a 35i for the manual!

Slick move Mr Wilks, no surprise with it having red leather. I look forward to seeing where you go with the wheels on this one

I want to try a twin turbo at some point but like John-e89 Im not ready to give the MR up in the near future but who knows what this time next year holds
I also look forward to reading how you get on with this one

That is an absolute beauty my friend, silver with coral leather is for sure one of the best combinations, same as mine :D
With all those bills, clutch, flywheel, discs at 49,000 its probably been driven pretty hard. Was it someones weekend 'toy'?

I only have 23i (2009), like you I love the manual box, you can get so much more from the car than the auto.

Enjoy, I am green with envy :driving:

There is nothing to think it hasn't been cherished & the seller appeared to want to keep it to the best standard in his ownership of almost 4 years .
Discs & pads would be ready for a change around 40k-45k ? Doubt they are the second set
The waterpump was documented as a tow away after failure so full repair job , the clutch was on invoice as " new clutch + flywheel fitted to remove slight sponginess in pedal feel reported by owner " :? probably not even needed ?
The injectors a similar invoice from Williams , with initial diagnostic report " owner reports hesitation / misfire at cold temp "
He said he was advised to change all 6 so he did so :? happy days for me :D it was only March this year
The rear 326s were also replaced by owner approx 18 months ago after splits in both rims , he wasnt a detailer though  needed the full claybar , glaze & seal treatment when i got it home

Sounds amazing. My brother does the claybar thing, he was telling me you can buy clay impregnated mitts nowadays. A huge advantage over a bar which you have to ditch if you drop it apparently!
He clay barred mine when I got it, amazing finish....

Best E89 to go for, with the full interaction via the manual gearbox to the engine you would never miss the few horsepowers anyway.
