New Wheels on - issue with TPMS Valves - MOT Failure?

Post by SteveSmith » Sat Nov 18, 2017 6:30 pm

Hi all,

After my stressful day yesterday of getting home from Marrakech, realising my first MOT was due, managing to book an MOT and it then failing on a cracked wheel I went down to BM Autosport today to get my new Wheels fitted.

Wheels are lovely, fantastic quality, made by Avant Garde who are part of Veeman (Wheels come with Veeman centre caps).

I went for the 9j fronts and 10j rear...

Terrible pics but the car is filthy (been on holiday for the last week!).

Pictures really don’t do these Wheels justice, they look incredible in the flesh and the amount of concave on the rears is incredible! Front of the car needs to settle slightly but I do need to get these rear spring pads fitted to hopefully raise the rear 5mm or so that the Eibachs dropped it so hopefully it will sit better and not lower at the rear.

Unfortunately, 3 of my TPMS Valves wouldn’t come off the old Wheels. So, I’ve got errors on my dash, will this be another MOT failure? I want to get it sorted ASAP but I also need my car!

I can take it back to the garage for a free retest, they can obviously see I’ve had New Wheels fitted, would they pass it based on that? Is it usual to have issues with the sensors? I’m guessing BMW will want to sell me 4 complete new units rather than just the middle valve part that won’t come out the old Wheels??

Like the new wheels, doesn’t look like you have much rim protection from the tyres though? :o

The tyres look stretched, was that the intention?

Oh god no! I considered the shadow chrome finish (which is basically anthracite) then decided against it! Stuck with silver, always my favourite colour of wheel. Once the car is clean they’ll blend in a bit!

They are ever so slightly. When I change the rear tyres I’ll go for a 265/30, currently running a 255/35.

Wasn’t my intention at all, I was worried they might be more stretched than what they are.

A faulty Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is now an automatic MOT fail on cars registered after 1 January 2012

I’m having a complete nightmare regarding this now. My only option to get this sorted now is to go to Kwik Fit and get them to fit universal ones. They’re £80 each and because I have ocd, I can’t have one valve looking different so I’ll need 4.

Had I of realised how much of a palaver this would be I don’t think I’d of bothered.

Thanks mate! Such a headache!

I’d recommend anyone wanting to change wheels to buy new TPMS Valves beforehand for an easier transition.

Best of luck getting this sorted , removing tyres is often where the rims get damaged so be wary .

This is what I’m so concerned about... especially Kwik Fit (no offence to anyone who works there but previous bad experiences!).

So stressful!
