Battery type...a bit confused...

Post by 4zwmb » Wed Nov 29, 2017 7:33 am

Hi all, its time for me to change the battery on my bmw z4 e89 msport sdrive 30i highline edition. Although this topic might have already been addressed I still could not find enough information as to the following:

1) Which kind and brand of battery? AGM and Varta was the overall information I could find so far.
2) Do I need to connect another battery/charger to the terminals under the hood of the car so that there is still current flowing through
the electronics while I am disconnecting the old battery? Some say yes, some say its not necessary.
3) After placing the new battery do I need to register it/code it/reset it so that the charging process for the new battery is appropriate? I
have read its not necessary if the battery is exactly of the same type but I have also read you need to register it with something I did
not know about - 'Carly'.

What do you think people? I took a photo of my battery this morning. Its the battery that my car came with and it appears to be the original one if I am not mistaken. I am not sure though because my car was a second hand car and not a new one.

Thanks all!

I bought the Varta recently http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VARTA-E39-Sil ... SwajVUOSEF
changed it myself , no need to attach a donor whilst doing it & have not had it coded . Some believe you do , some you don,t  it hasn't exploded as yet

You should have the new battery registered even if same type, or you will shorten the life of it. That probably won't bother you mr wilks as doubt you will be looking for number 11 long before your new battery gives out.

You two just made me laugh...;) I have been to a mechanic this morning and asked him the same questions. Regarding the battery registration, he told me that if the car is with start-stop function then yes you need to code the car. If its not with start-stop function, then its a normal change.

Mr Wilks, the link you sent me does not show if the battery is compatible with our z4 e89. However I could also see that it has the exact AH and CCA, (70 and 760 respectively) as my old battery. So I assume the Varta battery is perfect to use.

Well I think the 35 will stay longer than many would expect  car is due Mot in Feb so will have it registered then if my Indy thinks it needs doing :? There was a post made earlier this year by a forum member who appeared to be in the battery industry , from what I read I'm not in any immediate panic to have it "coded" or even registered especially as the car currently only moves from garage once a week .

Mud has been stirred allright because I am more confused then ever before now that I have pressed on that link! To make things worse, I went to 5 independent battery stores and none had a battery with my ratings, its either more than 70AH or less and more than 760CCA or less!!!! The varta battery does exist on ebay as you posted the link but the seller does not ship to Malta.

Just to throw more mud in water. Do you need a special charger for an AGM battery or will any work?

You mean this:

From what I can see this is used for vehicles with start-stop function, the bmw z4 e89 is not a start-stop...
