Speaker between seats?

In the top centre of the rear bulkhead, between the seats, directly above the storage/cubby joke, there is a removable plastic panel. Behind this panel looks like a mounting for a single speaker. Is that what it is? If so, is that an option on some cars with an enhanced audio package? If not, what is it for?

Cool. Do you know if it would be possible to wire one in to the Premium (or is it professional?) system on my 09 E89? I have the standard 6 speakers at the moment (2 x footwell, 2 x doors, 2 x rear bulkhead).

WHY is the storage a joke? It’s a 2 seat roadster, what did you expect? A wardrobe?

Yes you can put a speaker in the centre of the bulkhead but it’s of little use without the central speaker in the dash.

Plus you’d need to knock up a circuit that would take feeds from each stereo channel rear to make it mono and feed that speaker.

The only benefit is better balance but the rear speakers are so weak you’d not get value from this

If you want better sound go after market. Many have with good results.

Actually I think the storage cubby hole in the Z4 is one of the better ones! Better than my S2000 or Mk1 TT Roadster (from memory)

I think the storage is pretty good also.
Glove box, arm rest, cubby in the bulkhead, box under the steering wheel and the door pockets.
Without nav we have the storage there too.
Not to mention the shelf behind the seats, the mesh pocket in the passenger footwell and as we dont smoke either the ashtray :)

That was an autocorrect. I’d intended to write cubby hole. Not sure how it ended up being cubby joke! I’ve had MX5s since 1998 so believe me, I very much appreciate having decent storage space in the Z!

Back on subject, I actually think the stereo I have already sounds decent. I was driving home today with the top down and Jamiroquai blasting out and it sounded absolutely fine!
I would like to make improvements where I can but only where it’s simple i.e. I’d like to add the door tweeters.
I’ve seen under-seat subs claiming to be for Z4s on eBay. Were these also an option on the high end speaker systems? If so I’m guessing it could be fitted but I’d have to find another way to power it with an amp.
