Retrofit cruise E89 Z4

I know this can be done but tring to find the right stalk assembly on ebay is hard. There are lots of 3 series ones, so I started to check the part numbers.

The Z4 number is 61319123049 which cross referes to other cars:

So then I found one on ebay, part number 61319123040. Different part number however cross ref is interesting:

So am I correct in thinking if I get part number 61319123040 it will fit my car?

Yes it can be retrofitted and I can't see why that part wouldn't work. Maybe check with a local dealers parts dept

However unlike the E85/E86 it's not a simple plug and play install. You'll need the CC stalk and module as well as a new cover for the steering column unless you mod the one you currently have. You then have to have the software installed before it can be used so you'll need to obtain this from somewhere and use diagnostics to get in on to the car.

Your looking at a couple of hours I believe from a dealer to do that part so not such a 'cheap' install by the time you cost it all in.

A write up I once saw required the column stalk set and cover plus coding. No module I know if.

Will the clocks be different as the cruise shows where it is set round the edge of one of the dials?

retrofitting cruise won't give you the segmented speed display around the speedo, it will instead show the number/speed between the dash clocks.

Update

Got the stalks, which were part number 61319123040, there seem to more of these on bay, cost about £100


Before fitting the stalks I installed my Parrot Bluetooth


So set about dismantling the car

First thing was to make sure the ignition is fully off and key well away from the car (I have comfort fitted)
Then the first item was the airbag.

To remove this there are two slots at the bottom of the steering wheel ctr section. Poke a flat bladed screwdriver and you need to engage the spring and flip it right for the right slot and left for the left slot. Here is a vid, not me - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgnPs4RMUJk

This is how it looks on the wheel once the bag is removed

Once removed remove the existing stalk assembly. 4 x torx screens and two plugs on the back

The cowel just latched away from itself.

Fit the new stalks


Reconnect cable at the back and then fit the steering wheel. You will see there are two march which should align up





Once fitted connect the thin rectangular plug


Then its just a case of fitting the air bag. There is the plug to connect and then just push it back onto the wheel, you should hear a click as it locks into position.

I have orders a full cowl, again using a different part number, let hope it fits.

So the next job is to code it, this is probably where I trash the ecu

Hopefully it will all go to plan for you. I'm glad second hand parts are coming through now as it will enable a few people to dabble with some upgrades I'm sure.

I think I see the difference in part numbers though. Automatic wipers are marked (and have a lamp) on the Z4 part whereas they do not on the 3 series part you have. Also, there are other markings such as the dash brightness etc that are not marked on the replacement part.

Chances are the changes are minimal and you'll just lose the automatic wipers lamp and markings.

Confused, looks like there is the dask brightness mark.

Is the auto wiper lamp like a little slit on the button, maybe I could sawp the stalks over.

The main cock up I have just relised is there is no brake function on the cruise stalk dooH! Can think its that important tho

I have also niticed the tyre pressure warning and DSC lights are on

Yes the auto wipers, when on, have a green led in the stalk. As for brake function, I thought the car did that and no need to select from the stalk? As for TPMS/DSC lamps on, god knows.

When you pull back lightly on the cruise stalk the car slows, pull it further and the car brakes

Cruise now working

You need to use NCS Expert and use the code $544 and not $540

Also when finished you run Tools32 re reset the DSC and Tyre Pressure lights

Thanks for the great writeup Petrolhead!
I've just got the parts (cost me £75 for cowl and cruise stalks, which I thought was a bargain!) but just need to get the cable and software do the configuration and wondered if you can give any suggestions because there's loads of differing advice out there. Do I need to pay extra for the cable with software (as petrolhead did above), or can I just get a cheaper cable and download the software from the bimmerforum?
I'm asking because there appears to be an art to getting the connection working and I didn't want to get the wrong cable/software combination and then spend ages trying to fix that.
Hence I may just get the local independent BMW garage to do the coding but I was not impressed when I called them up and the person insisted I needed a harness to make it all work. He quoted £48+vat just to do the coding + about 2 hours if he was to put the cruise control on the steering column. Honestly do they work with one hand tied behind their back?!
Any advice appreciated!
