Roof Top Control Failure

Post by ibroker » Fri Dec 23, 2016 5:31 pm

So I cleaned the car this afternoon and the boot was in a bit of a state so I hoovered it. Removed the carpet floor panel and was poking about gently. Finished and put the roof down to do inside, lifted the boot lid to put the carpet panel back in tiny flash and a bit of smoke and now the car roof is stuck down and the book lid wont secure. Dash says the roof controller has failed.

Have check the fuses in the foot well and all ok. Is there an inline fuse anywhere?

That doesn't sound good, what made the flash and smoke, you need to find out and see what's there

You need to remove/lift the carpet and see if you can locate what has burnt out, can't believe it hasn't blown a fuse though ??

Sorry OP. Ive no experience of E89's only E85's but you just need to poke around and work through it logically.

As the battery is under there and unprotected if you removed the panel it's likely water ingress into the battery or electronics sited there.

Sadly there is no way to lift the roof now and if that's largely covering this area it's dealer time.

If you have some access you could examine the power feeds from the battery.

Roof Top Control Failure

Post by ibroker » Tue Jan 10, 2017 7:22 pm

Dealer replaced the roof top control unit under warranty, good news.

Bad news is as the boot would not secure or lock down, apparently as a result the roof section has movement in the boot sideways, I taped the boot lid down to drive to the dealer and the sides of the rear roof panel have moved in transit and marked. Apparently that's my fault!!

I phoned the dealer and explained the issue, they said drive the car to us, now there saying perhaps I should of had it recovered. I pointed out a recovery truck would still not have stopped the roof sections moving in transit, the roof control module is the route cause and the damage is resultant.......

The story continues....

Did your remap get flagged when they connected the car up ?

I'm always worried they wont pay up for anything unrelated when car under warranty

I don't think they can do that as it's unrelated to the fault. If the engine developed an issue & you had a remap they would tell you to take a hike. It can't affect cracked wheels/faulty roof etc

No no issues with the remap, Rob is correct.

Got to wait and see what's said today about the resultant damage. Fingers crossed.
