Front brake pads service

Post by adann » Tue Dec 27, 2016 9:45 pm

The next service due on my car is for the front brake pads, which will be in around 700 miles so anticipate that will be in January / start of Feb based on driving to work.

Is it worth going through BMW for this or better off looking at another garage to carry out this service? BMW charge £287 for this based on the pricing on their website.

Personally I wouldn't pay that money for front pads, they must have gold as the main sintered element :o

Front brake pads service

Definitely an opportunity for a price match. Id have thought about £180 + vat.
Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

Do it yourself, if you can change a wheel, you could change the pads.
All you need is pads and a brake sensor. Could probably do it yourself for under £50 using good quality parts.
Just check before starting that you dont need a special socket to remove anything.
I think I needed a special torx type socket to remove the calipers on the X6 when I changed them but other than that really easy.

How do you reset the idrive sensor? Or does it do it automatically?

On the X6 it was extremely easy, wouldnt think the Z4 would be much different.
Off the top of my head I cannot remember but I looked online and took it from there.
Im sure it just asks to reset the service indicator and once done it reset to 42,000 miles.

So by not going to BMW for this it would not impact the Full BMW Service History on the car?

I wouldn't call changing the front pads a service? It's just replacing worn parts, just like getting new tyres isn't a service either

I'm about to do the pads & discs on the front of my '07 Z4, do I need to replace the sensor when I do this ?

Personally the BMW service history don't matter a hoot to me. The condition of the car is what matters , has it been looked after properly? A Full BMW history may help but it's not what actually matters, to me personally. :)

2 hours??? That must be some chat :)

BMW must include "chat time" in their chargeable labour!

Easily done, properly in around 30 mins....

No way on this planet would I pay their price for front pads OP.. Have you actually LOOKED at them, to check how much material is left? If the "service indicator" is time & mileage related, depending on how you drive, you may be surprised at how little they are worn..
