Dreaded Run Flats / 326M alloys

Post by BlackyBoy » Mon Feb 06, 2017 12:11 pm

Hi All,

I am the proud owner of a space grey E89 Z4 23i. A week ago the onboard computer politely informed me of low rear left tyre pressure, which i duly rectified with a quick visit to the garage and a blow up of those run flats.

Yesterday, i have again recieved the dreaded notification of low rear left tyre pressure, which, to me means one thing....its likely the alloy. :(

I am yet to take it in (ironically its due to see BMW for a service). Part of me is crying at the thought of the cost if it is alloy.. any ideas?

The amount of poor roads and pot holes i have experienced in my ZED its no surprise to me. Maybe i should ask the council to cough up!

The car is on finance through BMW with low mileage is there anything to be done to contest this (i know in the early years folks would take it up with BMW as a known issue with 326's and those darn rock solid run flats?

p.s Ive only had her less than a year :(

bmw will perform a run out test on the suspect wheel if its cracked, then may pay up if its not buckled, from previous posts on here anyway.

They seem to be hit & miss dependant on which dealer you visit.

My car was 3 months out of new car warranty & less than 0.5mm run out-goodwill turned down by bmw as they don't acknowledge issues with the 326 wheels (only 296)
A new replacement is £585 plus tyre fitting etc, there's several places that carry out welded repairs for £30ish.
Change the runflats tyres or it will happen again!

Yes longer term i need to get rid of those run flats really! i will search the forum for some general opinion on best non-rf replacements.

I guess the question now is do i get it botched up for a small fee from the bloke down the road or book it straight in to BMW...

:) Not logical.

Yes, runflats are horrible, but they don't crack alloys. If they did, they'd crack 18"s as well as 19"s, but they don't.

The villains of the piece are BMW 19"s.

They do crack 18s. I had a set of Mv3's recently 3 of them were cracked and were fitted with RFTs.

I had a similar experience with tire pressure on rft, on 17" on mine though... Pump it up to pressure, week later a bong. Turned out to be a rather annoying nail between the treads. Tire was repaired by the independant as had been in the garage a few times for that tire since i got it. Had it done before christmas and been fine.

I would suggest getting it checked for anything in the tire, much cheaper than a new wheel if it is!

I ask because I'm trying to collect data on how may 18" alloys have cracked on E89s.

Mv3s never came on the e89. Just the e9* range of 3 series of the same generation.

Yes, I assumed that.

In one way, that's a pity, because so far there's been no reply to the thread about 18"s cracking on E89s and it would be good to have at least a few reports. (There will/should be, because no wheels are invulnerable, of course.)

either way, the MV3's and other 18" Versions (style 189s style 162s) are all very common place on the e90 forum for cracking , so that does confirm the theory somewhat.
