Boot always locked...?

Post by lordgrover » Fri Feb 24, 2017 8:47 am

Probably user error, but I struggle to open the boot without the bipper. It's always locked so the badge/handle doesn't work.
On one or two occasions it's opened as I expect, but mostly I have to resort to the remote. If I use the remote to open the boot it's fine.
What am I doing wrong?

Annoyingly, the US user manual shows a button to release the boot which would be most welcome.

I think if you have been driving then it will be locked, just like the doors. Use the unlock button on the dashboard to unlock the boot before you get out.

A bit more info is needed to see if its normal or not.
Is the rest of the car locked and you are trying to open the boot?
Have you been driving and got out with the engine running and trying to open the boot without unlocking it?
Is a passenger trying to open the boot after getting out with the engine running?
If the car is unlocked, the boot and the fuel flap should be unlocked also.
If you have been driving and the doors have locked, the boot and the fuel flap will have locked too.
If you have been driving, stop, get out with the engine running, the boot will stay locked until you press the unlock button on the dash or switch off the engine and remove the key.

The car is unlocked. I think.
When I pull away the door lock automatically.
When I stop the engine and remove the fob and open the door it unlocks for me to get out (the passenger door knob thing also rises).
If I go to the boot it's locked.

Does sound like a fault.
I do not have idrive in mine, I wonder if this is something that can be switched on and off in the idrive menu?

Heh. So it's an 'undocumented feature' then?
A bit of a faff, but first world problem I suppose.

My boot unlocks if I take the key out, also unlocks the doors, and if I press the dash unlock button. Doesnt sound right to me if you need to press the fob after taking the key out

If I'm out of the car and unlock it the boot is unlocked.

If I'm in the car with the key in the ignition then the boot is locked.

If I take the key out of the ignition and open the door then the boot is unlocked.

What's happening to you isn't the behaviour I have with my car. It's possible that it's customisable under the "door locks" setting in the iDrive, if you have it?

Edit - Just checked the door locks iDrive setting and there's nothing there about the boot. Maybe time to consult the manual?

Certainly not how mine behaves. Any chance a previous owner has coded the car to do this? I'm fairly sure you can code the car to lock doors as and when you like.

Do you have the optional boot release button down by the driver footwell on the right? You can at least use that just before you step out.

Hi , thought mine was always locked too but in fact the BMW badge just needs a deal more pressure when using it to open the boot so give it a bit extra force see if that works .. :

For my boot to unlock I have to press and hold the badge up for a couple of seconds, the motor will de latch then I can open the boot.

It wont just open straight away. I had trouble with this when I first got the car.

You can change door/boot unlock behaviour in iDrive and presumably non idrive cars via the stalk.

Was in the boot today and all that is needed on ours is the badge/handle to be lifted and it unlatches straight away.
No waiting, no extra pressure, almost as soon as the badge is lifted you can hear it unlatching.
