Dumb and Dumber

Post by jimbo1958 » Sat Feb 25, 2017 2:41 pm

Not sure whether it's me or BMW who are the "Dumb" or the "Dumber".

In the week I drove the E89 for the first time in a few months. Got a message up on the display suggesting the battery charge was low so decided today to charge the battery in situ. Disconnected the battery, connected the charger up and made sure it was charging and then closed the bootlid.
Went back a couple of hours later to check and then it dawned on me.......how am I gonna open the boot with no battery connected? :scratchhead:
Thought there might be a pull lever next to the bonnet release but no. A keyhole under the boot roundel but no.
Consulted the PDF manual I have which showed this gem of a picture.

Come on BMW, give us a clue.
Presumed this must be accessed through the cubby/ski access. Opened the cubby and then realised the shelving unit in there can only be removed from within the boot. With a bit of Brute force managed to push the shelving unit through into the boot along with some knuckle skin. :censored:
Shone a torch, had a feel around but no lever.:scratchhead:
After googling I confirmed to myself that I could open the boot by connecting jump leads under the bonnet and hooray it worked.
Found the battery charging fine but the 2 clips on the cubby/shelf are now broken. Image
Had a quick look around but still cannot locate this Boot Lid release lever. I'm sure I've seen it IIRC.

So I conclude that I was dumb to close the boot lid but some bad BMW design here.

You only tend to find the emergency release handle on American spec vehicles as its there to release yourself from the boot should you lock yourself in or are kidnapped and bundled into the boot

The jump points under the bonnet are the get out of jail free card for people in your predicament , as you have found out

BMW had it spot on with the E85, they fitted a key hole in the boot lid, cost cutting with the E89 maybe

2013 35is (you know what it looks like, there's no reason for me to be a jerk & force you to see it in the signature of EVERY post)

Yes this is why BMW say charge battery from the engine compartment lugs.
