2.0 tuning
Hi all
Had my 2.0 e89 a while now and it's a great car. Recently tho have been thinking a little more grunt wouldn't go amiss So been thinking maybe a 2.8 but finding a used one without msport ain't easy. I know lots of people like the sport versions but personally I think the ride is just too harsh. So I have been thinking whether chipping is an option - I mean we know the engine can generate more power as it's the same unit 1.8 to 2.8.
Any thoughts? Anyone used schnitzer or race chip?
Thanks

Get yourself over to evolve automotive (or similar)
An extra 100bhp is going to transform the car

I have experience of, and understand tuning principles but have no experience of mapping so am interested as to why BMW seem to be missing such an obvious trick. Different mapping would be a zero cost feature out of the factory, if an extra 100 bhp is genuinely available simply by re-mapping, with no downsides, why don't BMW do it as standard?
Presumably there are other differences with the higher rated 2.0 or there MUST be some implication for reliability or drive-ability?

2003 2.5 SE, low miles, Sterling Grey, 108's & Eagles, no stubby here! Unmolested.

They are doing it as standard hence the 18i 20i and 28i all on the same engine but they charge you for the extra bhpEwazix wrote:I have experience of, and understand tuning principles but have no experience of mapping so am interested as to why BMW seem to be missing such an obvious trick. You learn something new... I'll admit I've never really taken a lot of interest in the e89 so hadn't realised that was the only difference, in which case it seems daft that anybody shelled out £thousands more for the 20/28 over an 18i and didn't just get this cheap map instead. So the re-map would seem like a no-brainer

Thanks for the thoughts guys. The only thing I have managed to uncover as a possible difference is that the 2.8 has bigger stoppers - BMW are making a nice profit on those discs / pads

I have the tmc tuning box on my 2.0 and is excellent its plug and play can be disconnected easily if your worried about warranty think it increases to 240bhp and the car is far more responsive especially in sport mode I have also noticed better mpg , I was lucky and got one off ebay for £225 there are about £400 new

Correct - there are some minor differences between the engine range.ronk wrote:Im sure i read on here that the injectors are different?Smartbear wrote:The engines & turbos/inter coolers are identical across the range

However the question is - is it under warranty and how far you want to go?
If its under warranty then I would recommend RaceChips; if you want to keep only to stage 1 - as they provide a engine warranty
JB4 - is great if you want to go to stage 2 (remove cats), or go for Meth injection - however you need to tap into the canbus
If car is not under warranty; then a tune from evolve is kool
