Battery coding !

I replaced my battery a month or so ago and didn't recode anything. What does recoding do when replacing the battery? Everything seems fine!

Your new battery won't last as long, the charging rates are reset after coding-the new & old battery would require different charging rates.

Battery coding !

Hmmmm OK, kinda makes sense, thanks. Can't help but think that BMW have over engineered that slightly! Charging rates should be set by:

1) The battery voltage.
2) Internal resistance (which will vary with age but can be calculated by the charging electronics if BMW want to be clever).

The charger we designed for the McLaren P1 didn't even need recoding if you replace the battery! Thanks BMW!

Oh well, so is the recode just a reset of charging memory? Or do I need to code in the battery chemistry and/or Ah capacity ?

Thanks in advance chaps
Dan

OK, thanks Rob. I'll do a bit of Googling and see if I can learn a bit more about it :)

I've just bought a Carly dongle from Amazon, which should sort me out. I've only ever had VW Audi Group cars before and always had VagCom, so I feel a little uncomfortable owning a car at the moment that I don't have diagnostic / recoding kit for!! :?

Keep your cash in the bank re the tyres until they need replacing and if you really have to spend more of your hard earned - go and buy a Smarttop module to allow closure from distance.

The idrive does loads so my advice is to get the car, drive it, then make your mind up!
You don't stop playing when you get old - You get old when you stop playing!
So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Ah, it just looks similar! Looks like a great car with great spec! Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forum! I'm quite new myself, having only owned by 35i since Dec last year :) Been a steep but fun learning curve so far!
