MOT failure (cracked rear wheels)
Bad news for me yesterday at the MOT. 6 years old and 32k miles, the rear wheels had some cracks identified in them. Admittedly, 2 years ago i had the wheels welded and refurbished and its lasted for 14k miles.
As they have been repaired once, i have decided against repairing them again. BMW replacement cost for a pair of 326 wheels is £500 each plus VAT so some £1100 is just silly money to have the same $hite put back on to fail again in the next 20,000 miles or so.
so i decided to add £300 and get a set of BBS CH 19 8.5 and 9.5 rims.
Strangely i've had a hankering for these wheels since i owned my old E85 and saw them on another forum members car. Now i've had my hand forced. If these circumstances hadn't arisen i probably wouldn't have forked out for them, so maybe there is a silver lining to all this from this spot of adversity.

Sounds like you've turned it into a positive so happy days in some respects .
Love the look of those wheels . I am putting my pennies away for a set of CH-R's so very similar to those.
How do you find the ride on 19's? I love the 'full arch' look but haven't decided if I'll stick to 18's or not. A lot more spokes so I guess the wheel should stand up a bit better to cracks etc.

I run an E85 with 18's for 8 years and this one for 5 years and honestly their both rock hard and bone jarring with the RFT's. And no, I'm keeping to the RFT's for safety and my wife drives this as well and i don't want her ever stranded with a flat.Silverzedtom wrote:Sounds like you've turned it into a positive so happy days in some respects .

Beautiful new wheels ... and RFTs. One step forward ... and two back?
I appreciate your concern for your wife. I have one, too, but she gets a can of Tyreweld & AA membership.
In the meantime, the RFTs are long dumped and the car drives soooooooooooooooo much better. Indeed, safer, too.

each to their own, Ive experienced these things in a real life situation in my 5 series 4 up when the tyre wall was sliced out by a pothole on a contrail section of the M25. no drama, just a bang and a fault light.Busterboo wrote:Beautiful new wheels ... and RFTs. One step forward ... and two back?

Her personal safety by the road side me more to me than ultimate performance and better ride comfort. In My E85, I've been down the non flat road and back and got the teeshirt.
but its down to personal preference and balancing up the pros and cons.

Yes, the puncture thing isn't black and white, is it?
The punctures I've had in the last few years, fingers crossed, were only found at MoTs.
No loss of pressure, no drama and just an unseen shiny patch in the middle of the tread. Indeed, on a big Jag, there were 2.
These self-sealing punctures were on non-run-flat tyres, of course.

Nice looking wheels.
Looking forward to seeing them on the car.

I changed the alloys on my e89 when my rears were found to have cracks during its last MOT it was frustrating at the time.
Like the new ones though good choice. It is a shame that the BMW wheels are such poor quality as I really like all the OEM 19" wheels that were available on the e89.

I think this might be a UK issue only due to the exceptional bad roads. Would be interesting to see if this is an issue in any other country (ignoring Ireland as the roads there are even worse)

Just passed MOT with no advisories so that's 3 years since I removed the runflats and no cracks. No consolation to Dario though.jimbo1958 wrote:Sorry to hear about the wheels.

Where exactly do these cracks manifest themselves? Are they on the inside edge, the spokes or the face of the wheel. Are they easy to spot?
Our car's first MOT is due in two months and I'd like to check them myself.

Inside edge. Can be visible if you lie behind the car and wipe the wheel inner rim clean.New2Zed wrote:Where exactly do these cracks manifest themselves? Are they on the inside edge, the spokes or the face of the wheel. Are they easy to spot?

Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?
