35is, Tuning Update

Post by jleckenby » Fri Mar 10, 2017 10:04 pm

Hey all,

Doubt you'll remember, but after planning, Ive now got a few upgrades to my 35is:

- VRSF downpipes
- Dual Cone Air Filter
- Cobb Stage 2 aggressive remap
- Eibach springs
- NGK Iridium plugs

Certainly a bit more of a handful but looking forward to lots of fun in the summer. Going on a rolling road in a few weeks to see what shes making!

Does anyone have a LSD or other potential mods around here?

Quick shot in the garage today:

(Most work carried out by Mad4Mini in Leeds, great guys and service if youre in the area!)

Cheers

Nice! Be interesting to see what power you're up to.

Three questions, if you don't mind:

1) Much difference in induction sound on the dual cone filters?
2) Have you got a baffle panel to prevent the cones drawing in hot ambient air from the engine bay?
3) With your Eibach springs, does your active suspension still work and change the ride stiffness when you go between Normal and Sport?

Thanks :-)
Dan

Hey Dan,

1) Some but not loads, most of the sound improvement comes from the downpipes, thats the best mod imo!
2) No baffle but I have the airbox hose still there from front grills and blowing over them. Baffle might be an idea but havent noticed it being an issue
3) Yep all working fine, feel it actually rides better, less crashy :)

Im hoping for 400-420, but will have to see. I never trust all the percentages and whatnot quoted. Not timed a quarter mile yet. To be honest it may need a LSD for good times...

Getting power down illitially is the issue, but the power pulling out of courners will be amazing :driving:

Hehe, oh yeah, plus the turbo noise and pops with the catless downpipes is addictive!

Thanks James! Much appreciated! I had just assumed that if I replaced my springs that I'd lose the EDC functionality of changing stiffness using the Normal/Sport button. Now I know that's not the case, I will definitely look at some Eibach springs. Only one I've seen before are the 20/10 lowering springs. Is that the ones you've fitted?

I could be wrong, but I think its the dampers which are the active bit. Not sure on the exact part, will check the box in the morning.

Pleased I chose them, just the right amount of lowering to still be practical :)

Yeah EDC is electronic damper control, but having never had it on a car before, I naively assumed that changing the springs (and therefore the spring rate and damper height) would bugger it all up and you wouldn't really feel any difference anymore. But in thinking about it a bit more, and you confirming it all still switches between ride stiffness OK, I'm keen to give it a go and change the springs!

Thanks on the offer of checking the part number :-) Once you've posted it up, I'll look for a reasonably priced supplier!

Bit unscientific testing today, but 30-60mph close to 2-2.5 seconds.

Shot of the air filters, think they look decent :)

I've never considered upgrading the downpipes, is it a noticeable improvement in exhaust noise?

Noticaeable improvement is an understaitment! Much much better, not loud when you dont want it, but much much louder and throaty under acceleration. Lots of pops and turbo noise to boot.

On E89s they are apparently quite restrictive, so going catless and up to 3" diameter has made for much better breathing and a higher remap.
