Er, no dipstick?
Does anyone know how I check the oil level in absence of a dipstick on my 35i?

It will be found through the iDrive, either vehicle settings or status, can't remember which now but you will see the oil check symbol along with Tyre Pressure Monitoring reset.
Car needs to be on the level and in neutral or park and engine warm, at least on my M140i anyways

Sounds like a RTFM question
Also assume the above, needs to be up to temp and level to get a reading, as it is on earlier models.

I'm glad my new little i10 has a dipstick, takes about 10 secs including opening and shutting the bonnet. Through the idrive its painfully slow as you have to wait for it to go from 0 to 100% on the bar reader, I think this why alot of people wait for the low oil warning light instead

You can scroll through the menu on the instrument cluster using the button on the end of the indicator stalk. You have to be stationary though and on level ground for the most accurate results.
This is one of the bugbears I had with the N54 engine, as fantastic as it is. The 'what if the sensor fails' anxiety.

A little bit more re-assuring. I still prefer the two sensors in my head, my peepersSmartbear wrote:There's two sensors, the dashboard level sensor & an additional sensor that beeps to say add 1 litre-belt & braces!s.m.456 wrote:You can scroll through the menu on the instrument cluster using the button on the end of the indicator stalk. OP, I've always kept a 1L top up kit in the boot. Never had to use it mind but it's good to know it's there in case you get the alert to top up while your on a long journey.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes indeed I should have referred to the manual, as per the RTFM comment!
I will check it today, although I'd much rather have a good old fashioned dipstick !
Trust the Germans to have 2 sensors as an insurance policy, although that doesn't stop the "yeah but what if both fail?" thoughts!
