The tyres have done 5,000 miles. The off-side rear is damaged and must be replaced.

Should the near-side rear be replaced, too?

No, you should be OK with just the one. 5,000 isn't really that much. They'll have plenty of life left - depending on how you drive. :driving: :roundel:

Personalty I always try to change my tyres in pairs front and rear. Hence I have a spare tyre, from the last time I got a puncture. I could use it next time I get one, so not wasted. That might be just me though.. As long as they are legal then they will have a decent amount of grip, certainly in the dry it makes very little difference.

Has it been damaged by the 85psi you run your tyres on? :poke:

Ok then :P
After 5k miles I would replace only the damaged tyre.

Are you on run flats? If you're already down to three then it might be worth considering getting some non runflats on?

FWIW I'd check the tread depth of the undamaged tyre - if it has only 1 or 2mm less than a new one I'd just replace one.

If the difference is much more than that I'd probably want to replace both.

FWIW, I agree with just replacing the one and when you get new tires all around, you'll have a good 'spare' for emergencies.

Better to have slight uneven wear on the rear - it won't affect steering.

Sadly, buzyg's and Z4Rick's good idea of using the 5k worn tyre as a spare is limited in this case, because it's rear wheel only and, worse still, asymmetric.

Good point. Toss the bad one, buy a new one and quit worrying.

Good point. Toss the bad one, buy a new one and quit worrying. At 5k miles it simply doesn't make sense to cough up $750 for 3 tires you don't need yet.
