Is there a market for almost new 19" Runflats

Post by Peterboroughdave » Thu May 11, 2017 1:47 pm

Hi

Recently bought an E89 3.0s from a dealer to replace wife's 2005 E85 2.2. The newer car has the 19" 326M alloys and sits on bridgestone run-flats.

Although the newer car is less harsh than the E85, and she is not complaining, I would like to switch to non-run-flats as Sarah has back plus other health issues hence desire to soften the ride.

The Fronts tires were fitted at BMW by previous owner in April 2017 (less than 500 miles ago) One rear also looks to be new and the other half worn.

Can not justify £1000 for the new Non-run flats when the current tires are so new, if there is a market for nearly new run flats then I would look to sell and bring forward the switch. I have not placed the run-flat tires in the for sale section as these would only be for sale if I can get some reasonable value back towards the switch.

Comments appreciated

Hi Dave,

I think you will find that people on here aren't big fans of run-flats (and that's putting it mildly). If you want to sell them, I'm sure they will sell eventually for the right price BUT don't expect much for them. There is always someone out there willing to purchase them but it's just a matter of timing.

I was in the same position as you, same tyres and wheels but I wanted non run-flats due to the very noticeable ride difference. I sold them in the end (took over a year) and am now so much happier with the comfort it brings.

In summary, there is a market, be it a very small one but don't expect much for them. I would, and I'm sure most people on here would say, non run-flats are the way to go.

I hope this helps a little.

I believe there is a market, but a small one.... although I didn't have much luck selling my part worn ones last year!

The £1000 for a new set is high though as I did the swap on my E89 last Autumn. I bought a full set of new uniroyal Rainsport 3's for 326's at just under £400 online and got a mobile guy to fit them

stick them up on ebay on a 30 day listing.

collection only and message the winner saying cash in hand when they come to collect. don't use paypal.

that way you can then cancel the whole ebay deal and avoid all associated fees and commissions. if they do pay by paypal, refund them and tell them cash in hand.

Thanks for the responses guys, all 3 are really helpful.

Pastry - how was the car on Rainsport R3's and did you stick with standard sizes, I had ruled these out as the car tends to stay in the garage when the roads are wet.

I fitted 235/35 19 on the front and 255/35 19 to the rears. I was very happy with the ride and it was so much more comfortable than the RF's. Its a no brainer for me and your much less likely to crack an alloy as well so win win

I just replaced my OEM Bridgestone Potenza RunFlats (17") with Michelin Pilot Sport A/s 3+ and brought my old tires home to see if I could sell them via Kijiji. They had only 16000 summer miles on them, with lots of tread remaining, and looked great, but they were ten years old. I asked for only $100.00 for the set of four, and got eight replies showing interest. One local caller wanted them for his Nissan Altima sedan and offered 75.00. I accepted this and they are gone, with the cost of my Michelins (904.00 CAD including 13% tax) reduced accordingly. I will also receive CAD 70.00 rebate from Michelin directly. I have yet to test the new tires with spirited driving, as my wife always seems to accompany me and she frowns on that sort of behaviour. However, I notice a much more comfortable ride now, and something which was rattling on the way to tyre shop failed to do so on the way home.
Current cars: 2013 Honda Civic EX (daily driver, 55,000 KM) + 2003 Mazda MX-5 SE (Titanium Grey, with 22,000 KM) + 2006 BMW M6 (Indianapolis Red Metallic, just turned 67,000 KM)
First sports car was 1963 Morgan 4/4 in 1964.Image

I had a puncture on a rear at 7K from new.
I didn't want to replace one only, so bought a new pair of runflats. I wish I had bought non runflats now, but such is life.
I sold the unpunctured one, with I think 6mm remaining, for £25 plus delivery on Ebay. The buyer paid the courier cost.
I think it took about 2 months to sell.

That's 4 years older than the maximum recommended by manufacturers. :)

I fitted Rainsports to my 35I and sold a pair of run flats easily on here but for only little money.
The ride is better (18s) but when thrashing the car on twisties they do 'squirm' a bit and the car looses a bit of steering feel. I would recommend premium tyres if you want to improve the road holding when pressing on, but mid range tyres will improve comfort and are fine if you're not going to be driving the car near the limits.

Pastry,

Reference your earlier post could you confirm the rear tire size at 255 x 19 x 35 series, not 30 series

Yes mate, fronts would normally be 225/40 but uniroyal don't make that size and 235/35 is a very similar size. The backs were 255/35.

As someone mentioned earlier, they aren't the best choice if the car is pushed very hard however they handled well enough for me and will be ample for your wife (unless her real name is Sabine and she is on Top Gear  )

Hi Pastry

I have been concentrating on tidying up and selling the E85, apologies for not acknowledging your last response to my thread. (13th May)

Thanks for your comments and for advice based on your experience.

I see that you are in the South East and used a mobile tyre fitter, can you let me know who you used? I need to find someone who will do a 100% job who will travel to or is based near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

Dave
