Exhaust tips

Having replaced mine 2 months ago, I can confirm push on and pull off. Used wd40 to ease their hold. E89 definitely snootier than e85. I use alloy cleaner on the lip and inside to try and avoid the building up of crap on the bottom edge. They are brushed alloy so definitely will not polish to a mirror finish, be warned as stated earlier. Hope this helps.

Exhaust tips

I finally got round to doing something about the tips on our E89.
I thought I would just add it to this thread as it might clear some things up.
The tips are apparently stainless steel with possibly a nickel coating over it covered with high temp paint (according the the guy who managed to do this to them)

This is them with the paint and the nickel coating removed down to the stainless and polished.
They look pretty good to me and pretty much what I was looking for.
Much better than the silver painted finish.

That must have taken some serious effort! Lovely finish, you know how long it took?

Exhaust tips

Not sure. I originally went to get them chromed but noticed before I went that a magnet would not stick to them so I wasnt sure what they were made of.
When I got to the chromers he said if its not magnetic he couldnt chrome it so he went next door to a guy who does polishing to see what he thought. Stainless isnt magnetic, I didnt know this.
While we were standing talking he switched his machines on and buffed a section of paint off. He said there was some sort of discolouration but they should polish up well and to come back the next day.
I gave him 2 days and when I collected them he said they were pretty tough to do because of the coating that he though was possibly nickel.
The speed he done the test part I would assume it only took him a couple of hours.
Hopefully they stay like this.

That's weird.

BMW take a stainless steel part, coat it and then paint it a lifeless aluminium silvery colour, adding cost into the car to make it look dull.

Gotta love these folks (sometimes). :(

It was a place next to the Glasgow Chromers in Barfillan Drive, Craigtonso not a huge distance from yourself. Its called Lindsay & sons.
They cost £40 for the pair.

'Tips look great Stuart. Did your guy say how best to keep them that shiny?

Had my back boxes and tips done a while back but think I have to get my guy to do again now. Removal is easier I think than in place.

I never asked. Hopefully a bit of metal polish now and again will be enough. If not I can take them into work and buff them now that the hard part has been done.

I think I need to coat something on. Especially in the hard to reach bits.

I took mine of they are a push fit with a spring clip, just need a bit of persuasion . I then sent them of for chrome plating no probs even though they polish out imperfections prior to plating. Arrived back nice and shiny and fitted back on .

Not sure what the steel is but the company I used R&S Electroplating in Manchester did not raise any issues and turned them round pretty quick. Had them done in July 2016 and they still look good.

They look so smart. Are they just the standard oem tips? I was thinking about getting some better tips but if I can get the ones I've got looking like this then I might give it a try.
