I personally wouldn't want welded wheels on my car either. It's a bodge to save a few quid on quite a crucial component.
The 19" OEM wheels are junk and will keep cracking. Get a decent set of HRE or BBS wheels and some premium rubber, best £2k you'll spend on the car.

Fixed that for you....Ewazix wrote: ↑Wed Jun 21, 2017 8:25 am I don't like the idea of welded cracked wheels, I know Frigg all about welding but I'll express an expert opinion anyway - a lot of places won't even touch most work if this type as the welds are either ugly, leaky or break up again. None of which is good. Unfortunately the weld process weakens the alloy unless a lot of expert care is taken and its an appropriate area of damage.

Thanks for the advice everyone much appreciated. So an update:
The front shock absorber, I have had 2 indys take a look and say it is absoloutely fine, they say that BMW are chatting crap essentially. Going to have a third opinion just to be sure.
Alloys: I have read around the subject and from what I have understood a weld will not last for ever. It appears the rim will crack again, in the same spot given abit of time. In addition to this the heating required to integrate the weld weakens the alloy in other spots, by the time it is welded, refurbed and painted will be circa £400. Based on this I have opted for the option of a new set of aftermarket alloys.
Thanks!

Im not sure what you think you are saying, or why.z4pilot wrote: ↑Thu Jun 22, 2017 9:09 amFixed that for you....Ewazix wrote: ↑Wed Jun 21, 2017 8:25 am I don't like the idea of welded cracked wheels, I know Frigg all about welding but I'll express an expert opinion anyway - a lot of places won't even touch most work if this type as the welds are either ugly, leaky or break up again. Far too often people spout advice giving the impression they (personally) are qualified on a topic, I made it crystal clear I'm not, but that according to people who actually know about welding cast or forged aluminium alloy metals its a very unreliable process requiring knowledge of the exact material spec used as the inclusions and impurities are what cause the issues. Its less forgiving than welding steel.
The basis for my self confessed meager knowledge is that, in a previous career I was responsible for monitoring test and compliance certification of various components used in nuclear power stations, including materials integrity, and fixings, including welding. Hence why I'd happily risk a welded head, but not a wheel.
BTW If you feel the urge to 'fix' my posts with smart arsed eye rolls, please read what I've written and assume I'm actually trying to be helpful, and ACCURATE before bothering. Cheers

Don't stress mate, it was an attempt at injecting some humour into a thread where people were becoming very polarised in their views - not all of them correct - witness Busterboo's MOT failure statement.
Having said that you knew nothing about welding, you then went on to list some very specific reasons why welding wasn't a good thing - I was merely highlighting the contradiction in your response.
You were holding out on us! You clearly know way more about the topic than the average guy in the street and I bow to your opinion and apologise if it came across as anything other than gentle ribbing...

Update:
I have now additionally ordered a full set of Michelin PS4 tyres to go with the new alloys.
My mechanic is going to take a look at the front shock for a final conclusive look when installing the above.
The Window and Door pin repair I have been quoted £110 for both.

If it's not too late try changing to the Michelin PS4S. They are the UHP version.sunnydays wrote: ↑Fri Jun 23, 2017 9:46 pm Update:

I've recently changed to them from PSS and they are seriously impressive for grip. I'm giving it full beans in 3rd with no traction control lights! In a non-tuned car you could probably get complete traction in second gear.
