E89 Tyre pressure monitoring

Post by mcbutler » Thu Jul 06, 2017 4:03 pm

Hi All,

Latest question, yes searched the forums.

Does the E89 (mine is a 23i 2009) have the TPMS system that uses the sensors fitted inside the tyre or does it use the ABS based system?

If it uses the sensors in the tyre could you use tyre inflation form in the event of a flat tyre without destroying the sensor???

I don't use run-flats, ride is too harsh. Reinforced Michelin Pilot Sport 4 is lovely and sticky...

Thanks guys n gals....

I have been told that you can tell by the colour of the valve stem!
Apparently if the stem is black you have ABS based TPMS (apparently not very good)
If you have grey you have the actual in tyre pressure monitor!

Just out of interest do these sensors have a battery that requires replacement with the tyre?
If not how do they communicate their data to the car??

My e89 is an lci facelift (Sep 13) and doesn't have the sensors in the wheels-I think they were introduced sometime in 14?

Cannot find this site, plenty of general info on TPMS, where to buy, how to fit, types os and which is best but nothing that specifies which type is fitted to which vehicle.
Do you have a link by any chance??

Have a look at this clever gadget!
There is a cool video explaining how it works.

I may invest at some point!

Why did they go from ABS to in-tyre?

If the rims have wobbly rubber valve stems it rotation - short stubby rigid stems its the TPMS system.

Well my 2012 with 296 wheels had internal and I replaced the wheels with new internal ones and they coded up fine.

Did have for a while some other wheels with no sensors and display showed tyre pressures greyed out

I have the TPMS system on my new 420, it's cool to see a display on the Idrive screen of all 4 tyre pressures, saves a lot of scrabbling about on hands and knees with a pressure gauge. Seems accurate as well.
