I know its always a problem but after only 700 miles in my e89 the front end is peppered with stone chips. Is this usual with this car or have I just Benn unlucky?

Stone chips show you've been out driving where they happen and not in suburban safety. Keep doing it.

If you're worried about them, you could always get one of these ...

Sounds unlucky. Mine's pretty good after almost 100 times more miles. Do you drive really close to cars ahead?
Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

do you do a lot of tailgating? bmw paint is meant to be pretty hardy, but you can always get a bonnet bra if you're concerned

Mine has a fair few. I seem to find more every time i wash the car. I have just used the Halfords touch up set for stone chips. Not ideal but cheaper than a respray.
PS. That cover looks Bl**y awful I sooner have the chips.

I have found a FEW on my bumper :headbang: ...don't know where they came from.

I have bought some touch up paint from eBay, so hopefully it will do the trick. I know it wont be perfect but better than white dots on a black car.

My bumper is not to bad but I have picked up a couple of nasty ones on the bonnet that I have had to touch up.

I got my paint off eBay and it's a pretty decent match.

OP, I'd say you're a bit unlucky.

I've got a few after a little over 10,000 miles. I admit they irritate the hell out of me but I take a deep breath and try to view it in context. It is what it is and it's not life threatening - I could spend £500 on a bonnet respray and pick up a few more on the journey home, so maybe let 'em accumulate 'till you can't stand it any longer and then have them seen to.

Think of it as your car acquiring it's unique patina. In the meantime a tin of touch up paint and a fine brush will hide the worst. The alternative is to leave the car in the garage and just sit in the house. :(

Anyone vote for that......?

When looking to buy, the first car I saw was blue and the bonnet covered in stone chips, made worse by the undercoat being grey.
I opted for the Orion Silver and any chips don't show too bad, but the paint does seem a bit fragile when compared to other cars.
Having said that my cars bonnet has about 5 chips at 70k, so not bad.

They are certainly more susceptible being low but depends on your environment. I used to live out in the sticks driving country lanes with agricultural vehicles so mine did get a bit peppered also with spirited driving and the passes in Cumbria the road arent always tarmac but loose chippings.

Just had the front resprayed, cost £180 looked fantastic.

Agree with that. I've had better paint on other cars, less orange peel and more resilient to bird doo dah! It's OK paint, just not great paint.

I think that it is a problem for all low sports cars.

Has anyone tried using paint protection film?

NO DONT GET ONE OF THOSE, they are awful things, look terrible and will damage your paint if they get any grit etc underneath them.
You can get the nose piece resprayed for around £250 or even less by a smart repairer.

Stone chipped to death

I had Helicopter Tape on the sills of my Morgan Plus 8 to help prevent scuffs when getting in and out. There's a lot of uncontrolled use of gravity and leg swinging involved until people work it out. After a while the tape went a bit opaque and was a nightmare to remove, even with a heat gun.

Probably better left for it's intended purpose. Not something I'd consider again.

3M clear protective film helps a GREAT deal. It stretches over compound curves nicely like vinyl wrap and can easily be repaired or removed. Single biggest thing you can do to avoid stone chips other than always having a clear road in front of you.
