35iS exhaust side

Post by ColdKilla » Thu Aug 17, 2017 3:46 pm

Hi everyone.

Excuse my ignorance but with the split exhaust on the 35i and 35iS do both tail pipes work all the time or does it switch from one to both when things are ramped up?

Just curious!

Thanks

So it's a true dual exhaust, one per bank of 3 cyls.

One has a flap that opens and closes to reduce noise emissions largely at start up.

On start up, both will be ooen
on warming up, just the left side will be open.
Driving, it'll be adaptive.
Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

I'm interested in that. How can I check if my rigth exhaust flap is working? I've never seen it closed and maybe the previous owner did something in that way to be always open.

just have a look underneath at the (drivers side exhaust in the UK) if the little hose is connected - once you get under it's quite obvious

I thought the flap was closed on a cold start to reduce noise? My flap doesn't work and it sounds like it has a blowing exhaust for about 20-30 seconds until the idle comes down.

They frequently fail, leaving a rattle or not working at all. I’m on my second and even that’s Jerry rigged with a spring to help it close. German rubbish.

I've just found a much better solution to remove the 'rasping'/'hole in exhaust' sound at startup.

http://mhdtuning.com/
Very highly rated on other BMW forums, especially 3 series related. It's only for N54's/N55's though.

Now I'm running the golf tee mod and these options;
The cold start noise reduction works better than I expected. Very happy :)

That looks interesting. Can anyone point me to the two cables they state are required? (eBay?)

I asked already in the other thread. Is that video opening the flap when pushing up the lever or closing it? Mine is open when engine is off or at idle.

Yep I replied to your thread earlier.
The flap defaults to open when the engine is off. you push the arm to close it.

This is the main cable you need. Some have a small switch on top, but you shouldn't need it for the Z4. It bridges pins 8 & 9, making it work with older BMW's.

This is the second cable

The app come in two parts. The flasher module (main app) is £89 which allows you to flash a stock map and fiddle with the options you can see in the screenshot.

Then there are additional Stage 1, 1+, 2, 2+ maps available at about £50.

Fab thanks.

Mainly want it for logging to get to the bottom of my engine injector issues. Then it’s playtime because frankly why not.
