Since my 2.5i doesn't have a lighted shift knob, do I even need to remove the boot? Or can I just yank off the long one and put on the short one? Has anyone tried this to confirm before I start pulling my long knob really hard.

...sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity to say that

Hi there, odd first post I guess but here goes.

I noticed that the bmw online configurator is showing a different knob for the Z4MC now. Looks like the short shifter from the 335i msport models but has no chrome ring.
Guess it could be part number 25110418225 but since the Ms are already wired for the led illumination then I am holding out hope that it is a different illuminated model that can be retrofitted.

Anyone have any ideas? I am assuming the configurator is accurate.

Thanks

masterbm, welcome!! Yep, the configurator is usually pretty good, so maybe it' a change after all. What have you got?

Got the standard old style knob on the Z4Mcoupe. Looking to go to short shift so I might pick the brains of the parts guy at the local dealer to see if this is a new part.

Cheers for this!

Question, i just want to change the gaitor, not the knob, do i need to remove the knob, or do i just need to cut off the gaitor and fit the new one? (IIRC on another car i had you just needed to pull it over the knob and then use the zip tie on the inside to tighen it.

Any help appreciated.

just pull the knob off and remove the gaitor and put the new one and knob back on, less than 5 minutes job ;)

Just pull! Looks pretty stuck on? Worried about the cable below breaking. Assume i disconnect that temporarily?

Yes unclip the gaitor from the base from either left or right hand side first then disconnect the wire before pulling.
