Soft top wearing out

Post by Geezah » Thu Aug 27, 2015 5:57 pm

This has been discussed before, mines a facelift Zed and from what I can see it appears to be only the facelift models that suffer from it?

When the roof is down, the fold on the two outer edges rubs on the rubber of the rear scuttle. The rubber where the fabric makes contact has been worn rough and the fabric on the roof is wearing away. I am concerned that I will have to get a new roof, mines only an 08 plate.

I think someone said that there are a couple of adjustment bolts either side of the soft top assembly which can move the whole cradle fore and aft. I can't find any garage around who knows about this or how to do it and I don't think I'm skilled enough to have a go myself. In any case, apparently there is only a little movement available as the front of the roof won't be able to latch otherwise.

Am I just lucky or do all facelift models have this issue? Does your pre-facelift suffer from the same problem? How can it be sorted? Does anyone know of any garage in the Central Belt, Scotland who knows what they're doing with respect to this? I imagine you won't get much change out of a grand for a new hood and fitting?

I've got an si with no signs of what you describe, it sounds like an adjustment issue-I would try moving the roof a few mm forward and see how it reacts.

I suffer the same issue like many others, however I am not aware of any adjustment as such, its to do with the way the fabric sits when it folded

This is what I did and I hope it helps :) viewtopic.php?f=3&t=63460&start=15#p999418

I had this too. 2 years ago I put a piece of (neatly cut) black electric meal tape over the worn rubber edge of the rear scuttle panel and it's still there with no wear. It surprisingly blends in well and the worn part of the roof hasn't got worse either.

Has to be said Geezah - they all do it. If you've read through Swiftly's link you'll see that squashing the rubber trim back into place regularly (in effect flattening it a little) where it hits the edge of the folded roof on both sides can help but it is annoying and a poor design fault.

Luckily I had a new roof fitted under warranty when I first bought my Zed as one rear demisting wire had stopped working (!) but they told me at the time that they wouldn't have replaced it for the wear which I also brought to their attention. My original roof fibres had worn through. Here's a picture of my 2 litre roof which wasn't quite as bad - I guess this is the wear you're talking about?

I've never heard of the actual rubber getting worn, mine was perfect except the fabric wasn't seating correctly when it was folded, so the rubber ended up just brushing up against the soft top fabric :headbang:

Thanks for that Guys. Bang on the money Paul, exactly the same spot. Electrical tape sounds like a goer, but I really would like someone in Edinburgh or Glasgow way to try to adjust.

Mine has wear marks - on the roof and the rubber. It can be adjusted, but I don't know how - it will be on my list of things for my indie to look at when it gets it's Insp2 in the next wee while. They replaced the roof on my last Z, so they know how it all fits together. For what it's worth I tried the rubber thing above and it didn't work :(

Meant to say Geezah - my brand new roof went on at the end of last year and the marks have started to appear already  :headbang:
