BRAKE ISSUE
Released the handbrake on the car to prior to a short trip to the garage however the handbrake light stayed on and was amber in colour.
No other warning lights, no audible alarm and the car seemed to drive ok. Could this be a sensor issue? Any advice would be appreciated.
The light stayed on for the duration of the journey and has remained like that since.

You'd have to have the handbrake switch high on the list of suspicions... http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... 1316928204

BRAKE ISSUE
If the light changed colour, it's sensed the lever being moved. As the switch is simply an on/off, I doubt it's the culprit. Low brake fluid?

Does your car have hill start assist where it holds the brakes for a couple of seconds on an incline?
If so has it stopped working?

Hill assist isn't done via the handbrake though is it? Presumably it's done via the disks and calipers using the abs control unit.

Yes, but there is a sensor that if it fails causes a yellow handbrake light and a key symptom is the hill start assist stops working...

No expert but is the handbrake linked to the hydro unit?. I would have thought the handbrake was just a set of cables going direct to the pads and that it must be the switch that is playing up.

Is is just the handbrake light that is amber. Nothing else is showing and the car seems to drive ok?

I think he means that the yellow handbrake light can mean lots of things - not just a handbrake fault (e.g. low brake fluid, hill start assist etc). OP - if you have 5DCA Hydraulic unit pressure sensor internal fault it will almost certainly be the ABS pump however BMW now have a repair kit costing approx £185 (inc VAT) which resolves the issue. This is for the ABS pump repair module. Its a very common fault but BMW have never recalled their cars to correct the problem as it was not cost effective for them.

Correct.
When I had just a yellow light it was the sensor cluster under the driver's seat but that code is fairly conclusive.
