E85 3.0si drivetrain noises

Post by saseinlinie » Wed Sep 27, 2017 9:50 pm

Hi guys and girls. Just wanted to check with other owners if the below noises are normal. This is my first BMW(2006 E85 3.0si), and it had been sitting for more than a year before I brought it back to life.

1. There is a clunk from the rear when getting on/off the accelerator. I try it in first gear, really low speed, in the garage, and I can definitely hear a clunk when i touch the accelerator pedal, a mechanical noise of something engaging (diff?). I never touch the clutch, just accel. on/off. I hear the sound when I slightly press the accel. and when I take the foot of it again. Happens at higher speeds too, but not so easy to hear because of other noises(tyres, wind).

2. At usual speeds (anything from city speed limit to highway), in gear, there is a mechanical rumbling, again when coming off the accelerator, in gear. Doesn't manifest when keeping constant acceleration, only when taking the foot off the accel., with the car in gear(clutch pedal not pressed).

Thanks.

Issue 1 sounds like the common issue of the propshaft joint needing re-greasing. I've not yet done this on my car but I'm sure someone else will be along shortly with detailed instructions!

As already highlighted point 1 is a common problem... did a quick search and this thread came up which may help with these issues?

Point 2 sounds like a prop support bearing to me, or it could even be the Prop shaft coupling between the gearbox and the prop.... just a guess but that's where I'd start looking!

just done some research on it, i found this statement from the guy on here who did the job himself

'The thing is this happens long before anyone would expect worn diff parts. The problem is the seal isn't very effective and is exposed to constant water spray, so the grease gets flushed out prematurely. The procedure simply replaces the lost grease. The symptomatic clunking is caused by the end of the output flange banging against the inner diff housing. There's no real pressure involved, so wear caused from ignoring it isn't a huge issue, but it's really annoying!'

which is a good enough statement for me not to piss about with it 8)

Great info guys, and the parts don't look expensive, I'll prob get the greasing done and the bearings replaced when i do the oil change in spring, since it's not something I can do myself. For this year the Z4 season is almost over.

:o

For some of us the seasons never over! Get the top off - loads of clear dry days over autumn and winter. Fleece on, heater on (and heated seats) and if you must a hat on and enjoy the roads. But it is my daily driver :D

 sure except here winter tyres are mandatory by law starting november...so until spring I will probably only put about 500km on the car, doing an uninsured warm-up drive every few days to keep everything lubricated  :driving:

Agreed. Those cold crisp ultra clear days in winter are amazing with the top down and the right clothing on.

That's the one.

When they are worn they become loose and there can be play in the drivetrain.

I changed mine at 75k and it was in pretty bad condition.
