My thing has fallen off !

Post by SeanConnor » Wed Nov 01, 2017 6:33 pm

My sunglasses holder will no longer shut. On closer inspection it appears as though the 'back bit' of the plastic catch has fallen off. I'm stumped as to where it has fallen and I am going to try to make a replacement. I have no idea what the original part looks like . Could someone please point me in the right direction ?

Cheers

I bought two off an eBay seller when he bought a batch from BMW direct he was selling them for £10 originally so I bought two as mine was broken when I got mine. He no longer is selling them but this seller is.

I bought one a while ago to replace my broken one (spring had broken).

But despite making sure it worked outside the unit, it wouldn’t work once installed. Took it out a few times to check, and refitted it, but was never able to get it to clamp the cover shut.

Just superglued the compartment closed in the end, and keep the sunglasses in soft pouch in the centre console.

I removed the SOS & Bluetooth button unit and replaced it with an "Oddments Storage compartment" , my sunglasses case fits in there just fine.

RealOEM doesn’t show the release mechanism...only the whole sunglasses holder (over £200 I believe).

The photo/eBay link is for the little 15mm long close/release mechanism that replaces your original broken one.

Well that was £20 wasted ! I fitted it and it didn't work. I then broke it removing it :-(

Can some kind coupe owner PLEASE take a quick snap of this thing fitted ?

Cheers and thanks in advance

If its a pain in the arse Id do as mentioned and glue it shut then do what us e85 roadster owners do, buy an additional first aid box (you'll have one under your passenger seat) and fit under the drivers seat to store your sunnies for when you have the roof down and the sun is out... one going cheap here

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E46-3-Se ... SwFJBZXipb

But you still need a mount bracket

Yup thanks for that idea I do indeed have an empty box under the passenger's seat.
It's a bit of a faff though to get stuff out. I want to fix the thing not least because if I ever sell the car then a glued shut compartment isnt going to go down well.

For anyone interested I fixed it. I put the first one in back-to front and it broke. Someone on the Facebook page posted a picture of it fitted. I goes in with the open 'prongs' facing the driver. I pushed it in (ooh errr missus) and made sure it was in the open (down) position. I then tried to close the hatch and it woul not latch :-(. I then lost any patience I had and forced the damed thing shut. I would then not open :-(. I prised it open with a redit card and voila it works :-) Seems that it needs to be firmly seated in the slot.
