Boot Lid Corrosion (list of repaired cars)
I couldn't see a list of cars that have suffered boot lid corrosion, and as we get near to the end of the corrosion warranty, I wonder how many cars suffered, at what age & mileage? other useful info; what colour is your paintwork, was it fixed under the anti-corrosion warranty, and if so by which dealer, and what did they do to remedy it?
Any issues with BMW accepted the claim?
Or did you tackle it yourself/got a body shop to work on it? what did they do?
Info could come in useful over the next few years, I would assume more cars will suffer over time.
I will post pics of my rusty area (uh hm!) and what happens to my claim/repair as it happens.
Thanks.

Not bootlid but mine has some very very small bubbling on the passenger door at the top where it meets the seal. Out of warranty but I've found one for £60 COMPLETE with window mech and glass etc rust free in the same colour. Just depends if I cam be bothered or not but £60 is stupidly cheap.

I had my Coupe tailgate and passenger door done 2 years ago under the anti-corrosion warranty.
Think my mileage was around 80,000 - 90,000 miles and car was registered in December 06.
It was repaired by a BMW Barons in Hindhead but the "Rust" was quite superficical (only a small bubble around about 3mm wide)
They stripped the inside and treated it, then re-painted it. (Insides only)

£60 sounds like a bargain, my experience of classics, get it whilst you can and do it when you can be botheredMonkeydonkeyratmagic wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2017 3:23 pm Not bootlid but mine has some very very small bubbling on the passenger door at the top where it meets the seal. This sounds similar to mine, it’s 07 with 97,000, rust area is about 10mm, expect it will be rubbed down, treated and painted, but will want to make sure it doesn’t come back, I wonder if it needs a thin rubber stop between boot lid and body.coupedan wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2017 3:41 pm I had my Coupe tailgate and passenger door done 2 years ago under the anti-corrosion warranty.

The assessor at sytner solihull said he has not come across this before, and they see lots of coupes, so was wondering if it really is s big issue, and what might cause it. Interesting link, I have read a few now, not sure of the cause.Marlon wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2017 2:30 pm Its not uncommon - usually affecting the coupe tailgate, useful thread found with a search on 'tailgate rust' :

I think the cause of mine was if you look in the bottom of the leading edge of the bootlid. You should see 2 drain holes either side of the bootlid, mine were blocked so the water could not escape.. not sure if this is the reason but seems feasible to me...?

Drain holes are the cause of lots of issues, so sounds feasible, I had a jag xkr with a blocked drainage channel above the door, that caused all sorts of problems, will take a closer look.

I’m being asked to provide proof of corrosion checks, which of course I can’t! I have proof of services carried out to BMW service schedule, but they don’t mention the corrosion check (the main or specialist receipts). Surely BMW would have to include it separately in the service book check list if they wanted proof that it had happened? And isn’t it part of the service anyway, so if it is ticked, it should be assumed (rightly or wrongly) that it has taken place?
I don’t know what to do next.. but it doesn’t seem right that they can reject it on this!

Update on this, and good news, BMW agreed to repair my boot lid, the dealer pushed to get it replaced but BMW would only cover a repair, which should be fine as the rust area is very small.

Seems like a lot of people have just had repairs. Looks like I was lucky then to get a completely new boot!

They were asking for proof of checks to the body during servicing by specialists, saying that is part of the service when carried out by BMW dealers, I argued that I, or BMW, could not prove if it had or had not been carried out, as it isn’t recorded in the service book, and the BMW main dealer services (of which I have the invoices) don’t mention it either, so the default position should be that it had been carried out, as it was serviced by BMW dealers and BMW specialists, who are approved to service the car under warranty.. they offered the repair, and as that is what I expected anyway (it’s a very small area, 20p size on both sides) I decided not to battle on for the full replacement.
