Z4 (E85) running like a dog!

Post by Unclepip » Fri Dec 01, 2017 8:52 pm

Hi There, E85 is running like a dog - I have diagnostic tester on it and it reports cylinder misfires/ mixture issues across all cylinders (see attached) screen dump. Has anybody got any pointers please - coil pack? Any suggestions where to start welcome.

Thanks

Phil

I would start by checking the rubber elbow pipe between the airbox and inlet manifold , a common cause of massive air leaks.....They split

Could be a coil or two that need replacing

I’d be changing all the coils out for sure (assuming plugs are in good condition)

Swap coils 1, 3 and 5 with 2, 4 and 6 and see if the misfires move to those cylinders.

Diesel pump doesn't fit in.

OP have you had any work done at all like changed the valve gasket? Possibly chomped into the loom for coils?

My money is on a vacuum leak (like already said, check the rubber elbows, but there are also some rubber bungs at the end of the manifold that can leak) or something with MAF/O2.

I had a coil fail a few weeks back, £17 from ECP and 5 mins to change.

Doubt your issue is a coil though. And more than one failing at the same time is very unlikely.

Split pipe sounds more probable.

thanks, will explore further shortly, it does seem strange that more than coil should go at the same time... :o

I'm with Guido on this one.
A) cos he's a clever Dutchie and is usually right 8)
B) cos I had similar codes shown before I replaced my intake boot. However, my throttlebody was also knackered so I'm not sure if that was related/contributory to the codes.

Swap coils around is cheapest canceller then replace intake boot. Look for splits/holes at the joint of the smaller outlet.
Good luck.

HI Chris,
I am using the Cable Shack V4.3.
I am no expert but it seems very versatile, the support I had fro the software developers was fantastic.

Hope that is helpful, feel free if you have any further questions, I am no expert.

Phil
