Update on this.
Also have a code elsewhere.
Cable Break to MASK or Navi.. and
Communication IBUS transmit fault.
So with the above I'd take a punt on this being an earthing fault or something.
Are there are known issues with the battery terminals on these or the cabling? I know bmw do with slightly later cars but I can't find much on these.

Check the connector on the cluster? Comes out easily.
Aslso check the ground points no harm in it. I had weird problems with my TB due to a grounding issue! One under the bonnet and one I. The boot to the right of the battery tray under the carpet.
