E85 Electric Power Steering Failure - Control Unit
Hi Guys
Went to jump in the Z4 on the weekend and the EPS light was on and the sport button was inoperable and I had no power steering. After taking it to my local BMW specialist they have diagnosed that the control unit on the EPS has failed. Has anyone else had this issue? Be keen to read about how you resolved it. I've been quoted around £2,400 for a brand new part from BMW which is out of the question.
Has anyone used these guys?

Seems like a good solution as they offer an unlimited mileage warranty on the rebuilt part.
Thanks in advance

I've used them for a Vauxhall ECU.
Tested it and told us it could be repaired. Think it was about £160.
Sent it back next day. Perfect. Saved us a lot of money.
Recommend.

If you fairly handy with tools just swap to a hydraulic set up. Ditch the electric steering its rubbish anyway.

Think mine came in really cheap around a few hundred quid. But i brought all second hand parts. Reconditioned bits the price goes up. And you may want to buy new lines. And the biggest cost is the M intermediary shaft?LordOxygen wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2017 10:27 amWhat's the approx cost assuming DIY labour to do the job?Machine monkey wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2017 10:10 am If you fairly handy with tools just swap to a hydraulic set up. You also want a purple tag rack.

I'll throw my hat in here as another hydraulic convert. It's a reasonably simple job on the M54 engined model, which I'm assuming you have due to your sig!
All the parts bar the intermediate shaft come from the E46 3 series, intermediate came from a Z4M as mentioned before.
Total cost for myself was approx. £500 diy I believe, that included reconditioned rack and pump, with the rest second hand. All new bolts etc as required.
I didn't rush at all and took a weekend, no issue at all. Could easily be done in a day if desired.

When happens with warning lights if the EPS is not connected to the can network? Does the car not keep throwing errors?Machine monkey wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2017 10:10 am If you fairly handy with tools just swap to a hydraulic set up. Ditch the electric steering its rubbish anyway.

Quick Update - Took the car to Forza GB - as expected they diagnosed a EPS Control unit failure. Sent the unit off to ECU Testing who rebuilt the unit with a 4 day turn around time. Unit then re-fitted and EPS is back working. Superb job by Forza GB once again. 15% forum discount applied aswell.

mjennings23,
Hi. I'm thinking of doing the same to my 2003 Z4. Do you have any advice/instructions on how you did the conversion please?
Thanks
Paul
