Cracked Windscreen :(

Post by Wildfire » Wed Dec 13, 2017 12:17 pm

So on Sunday on the way to my folk's house I got a stone chip, 2 in fact.

Queue a call to Autoglass on Monday the earliest they can come out was today. One chip was not great as it was on the inside of the window (which apparently is touch and go on resin injection). The second has spread to a 10 cm crack in the freeze.

Balls.

Just venting really. I wanted to drive the car on Saturday, but the replacement screen won't be in until Monday. I guess it's the Gf's knackered Civic for Saturday.

I'm sure I've seen a thread on here about making sure you get the official BMW seals - may be worth a look

The screen will be fine to drive with a crack in. It won't shatter as it's laminated glass.

Bmw windscreen surround is a must as the pattern part ones crack at the top edges. I have previous experience of this and my current one (i've had 3 windscreens fitted) has cracked slightly.

It's only a cosmetic seal, so doesn't affect anything, but it does look unsightly.

I’d drive it still, like Ben said it’s not going to shatter. It might grow a few inches but it’s already broken. :driving:

You can insist on bmw glass- I would as when mine done the fitter said he was glad it was official one as the others are a pain to fit.

My car had its screen replaced before I bought it and it developed a leak. Took BMW 5 weeks to work out this was the reason for the leak. Don't trust after market you want BMW screen and seals

Plus one on the OEM windscreen seal

Autoglass fitted an after market screen which is fine.

Autoglass on the way now. I have requested an OEM seal, but an oEM screen will be a while for a wait and I need the car for a fair bit of driving around over Christmas.

I'll keep an eye on it though an make sure I've got it warrantied.

You do realise bmw don't make the windscreens? They're most likely manufactured by Pilkington who simply put a BMW badge on them.

Therefore an 'aftermarket' Pilkington windscreen will be exactly the same.

Ok, good and bad.

Bad: Autoglass did not send an OEM trim and it basically looks awful. But the car is servicable.

Good: Technician was a Z4 owner and a biker. He was really embarasssed, called the office and has re-booked in asking for genuine parts all round and the Z will get an OEM screen with logo and OEM seal from BMW next week.

I do realise bmw don’t make the majority of their components- however OEM are of a higher spec than aftermarket generally, and in terms of the screen I was just offering my experience where the professional who knows these things said they were far from the same.
