Re: Rear knocking

Post by Exactmax » Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:24 am

Well I have had both of the rear springs replaced and the knocking noise is still there - its doing my head in!!! It only happens when going slowly (20-30MPH) on the left handside. The garage checked everything and didn't find anything else wrong, any suggestions anyone?

Thanks

Hi Exactmax,

Did you ever find out what was wrong? Mine is doing exactly the same.

Cheers

PCBung wrote:Hi All,

I've got a slight problem with my Coupe, i appear to have a knocking from the rear O/S. Its hard to describe but sounds just like when my E46 front bushes were worn.

Strange thing is the knocking only happens when driving slowly (20-30mph), across snow or little bumps etc but it does not when you hit a big pot hole or driving faster.

I have had it in at the dealers twice and they found no fault... any ideas??

Rear knocking

I've had this knocking for 2 years now, new shocks and mounts haven't fixed it and springs are fine, it's kind of ruining my enjoyment! Anyone any ideas of possible cause? It's an e86.

Rear knocking

My coupe is booked in for what I described to the indie as a ''clunking'' from the rear. He reckons it'very likely to be the diff flange that needs greasing.
There's a few threads on the forum regarding this issue
I'll report back on Jan 21st after the works carried out.

I think it's labour intensive more than anything.
Exaust removal etc to gain access. I'll get the diff fluid changed at the same time along with gearbox oil change to hopefully smooth out the notchiest box I've ever used.
But I still love the car. :driving:

I'd be surprised if it's the diff. Some people have reported a knock or clunk when selecting first gear which is the diff. But at 30mph this has not been the case. Hope it all gets sorted  and look forward to a update.

+1 for Yorkie Z. I don't think it's the lack of grease on the diff flange either.
I had a slight click/clunk when selecting 1st or reverse but not at any other speed/point.
Wild thought, wear in the calliper? If you hear the dreaded 'clunk' then try feathering the brakes to see if it goes?
Keep us informed.

I had a rear knocking/rattle at low speeds over bumps. Eventually fixed when I had the rear trailing arm bushes replaced when fitting some RTAB limiters. Indie said they didn't look that bad but it hasn't happened since.

Just got the car back and pleased to say the "clunk" as gone. Possibly mine was a different issue to other owners.
I can't recommend Anthony at BM Workshop Leeds highly enough.
Fantastic knowledge and great customer service.

My si had a similar knock which turned out to be the common broken silencer mount issue, welded back on & no more knocking :)

Would you mind sharing how much you had paid to have this done? I'm struggling to find anybody to do this job for my Si.

Sorry for the late reply. Along with the gearbox oil changing it came to around £300. But the was due to the exhaust studs being rusted solid so it included the extra labour involved in drilling them out.

It's very easy and cheap to rectify - do a quick search on this forum and add yourself to the list! viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9219
Coupe, KW coil overs, PSB limiters, Powerflex ARB bushes, 18" CSL reps, Aero skirts, ZHP leather knob, Whippy and proud. Probably needs a wash
