Hi,

Mine did'nt flip up when I first bought the car (Knew about it at the time), was all set to get a second hand one from E-Bay, when I read a post elsewhere suggesting disconnecting the battery for 10-20 mins, reconnected and hey presto :D (You'll have to reset your windows after - easy to do). Got to be worth a go!

If it doesnt work when I was looking for a replacement they were around £150-200.

Excellent, thanks for the tip. I did think it was weird that it worked fine once I'd pushed it.

In fact, when I turned it in just now it didn't roll up, so I pushed it. Further down the road I decided to test. I turned the car off and on again and the screen rolled up :?

I hoping that this means these a bug somewhere that needs to be reset which a battery disconnect should do. Here's hoping!

If it needs a new screen I'll be taking it back.

TBH I doubt a battery reset will fix this issue.

Worth a try though, right?

Currently it seems to work as long as it hasn't been stood for very long :?

Either way there's something wrong that needs to be done *sigh*

It'd be interesting to see what exactly goes when this issue occurs. The stepper motor has an integrated control board on the back (inside the motor housing). I wonder what exactly fails...? I'd be curious to find out as supplies of new screens are only going to get rarer.

If someone has a broken one, it might be possible to fix it. I found an alternative motor that might work when I was doing my dissection of a screen.

Most of the components are easily replaceable, but availability of the components might prove difficult.

I have a spare faulty one, bad half share in a new one with PVR.

As you say they are getting harder to find so I'm collecting spares :D

Do you want to part with your spare faulty unit? I take it that it's the complete sat nav unit with faulty LCD screen?

I've just taken my Z out today after being away for a few weeks with work.... suns out /roofs down... and guess what the sat' nav' screen judders - opens a little, then closes...
Looks like the consensus is the stepper motor is on its way out according to the threads below. But where can I get a replacement?
I've been looking on eBay ad have my brother in law ( who works in the service dept at a BMW dealership - nice ) trying to source and price one...
Any advice appreciated - JF

People do love to expect the worse and jump to conclusions.

When I picked up my Z4 my screen wouldn't pop up properly. I fixed mine by charging up the battery. The battery was low because it had been sitting for a while...cheapest fix ever!

My 2003 Z4 navigation monitor also has not wanted to open, though you can hear the motor trying...Can I just wedge a a plastic wedge to keep it in the "open" position? Would that damage the connection to the stereo and navigation?... Thanks for your expert advice...Mike

Doubt that will work. Unless it open itself it does not work. You can easily flip the screen open, but again it won't work, as the unit has to do it itself.
