It wasn't getting too wet, hopefully caught it in time. Might leave the passenger side carpet out for a bit let the footwell air.
Glad i got to it before the smell of damp came into my car like others have had.

Sorry for the resurection shuffle on this thread but i have a bit of water coming in at the passenger side at the bottom of the door seal. I intend to get the door card off for a look at the membrane when the rain stops but wondered if I could order the butyl tape now. Had a look at ebay and Amazon and the stuff comes in every length and width imaginable. What size should I be looking at? 50mm wide x 1mm thick single sided or 6mm wide x 5mm thick double sided? Do I retape the membrane or do I tape over the membrane/door skin junction?

Hi, I have recently just done mine and the dealer where I bought my membrane from gave me the butyl tape for nothing. It is around 5mm wide and in thickness where as the butyl tape which was on the car from new is around 20mm wide and 5mm in depth. The tape I got given has done the job and now have no water ingress at all

If you go to most DIY shops and look for those plastic 'L'strips that go around the edge of a bath or shower you will see that they are fixed with butyl tape which are sold in a roll alongside the strip. Cheap and very very sticky!!".

My issue when I had this was the door seal (passenger) just at the point where the door stops/window starts, the rubber tubing had become flattened over time nothing more. Its the point where one side of the seal seems to fit into the other. Leaked at exactly the same point on various inclines, carpet wet etc. So I spent a few hours with a hose one day and waited for the water to start dripping which it did, I thought it was the seal filling with water and not draining as it should. That's when I found the entry point and the fix....

Cut a smaller diameter tube from an old brake bleed kit, just so happened to fit nice and snug, half going up the door frame and the other down towards the hinge (used washing liquid to ease the task), this pushed the seals back out which fixes one issue of water running almost around the door frame at the bottom, the tube left the channel open so anything inside the seal still drains. The tubing insert is harder than the seal so hopefully it wont compact/crush as the original....anyway, it's water tight.

Fixed the problem for me, hope it helps!

Took the door panel off today and found that the liner had come away completely along the bottom and was letting water in at the bottom of the door card. Just need to stick it back. When you guys replaced the butyl strip, did you remove the existing or just stick the new on top.

If you removed it - how the hell did you manage??

I had a similar problem to yours in an old Escort and fixed it exactly the same way. Absolutely hate water leaks and just love it when its an easy fix to solve such a big problem.

I removed the old stuff and was a real pain but just pulled it off little bits at a time. Took me a while but once all off the is no sticky residue on the metal so good base for the new tape

Seen it on Wheeler Dealers, Edd did a fix the same. Glad you got the fix though, reused mines as it had never been off and was careful peeling. Check the door seals where mentioned anyway, I was led down the garden path on this one for quite some time.

Haha, I saw that one and was going to mention it. Think it was the Maserati or the Aston Martin when he filled the cabin with smoke to track down the leak.

Old stuff came off ok(ish). It was gun applied so some areas were thicker than others. Think that may have been part of the issue cos the liner wasnt adhering to the thinner areas. Looks professional now
