I was concerned about my lack of use of Red (only use about 2/3 times per week) and my upcoming holibobs, so I discussed this with my best mate, (motor engineer) who said that it would take a couple of weeks for the oil to drain completely away, so a few days or even a week without use wouldn't be a major issue. He did say that after a week of non-use, I should start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes to get the oil pressure up, then drive as per usual i.e. wait for normal operating temperature levels before, and I quote, "kicking it's head in". It's the repeated short journeys that are the worst, so I use the wife's Volvo. Failing that, I have a bike and backpack.

*edit* he did also confirm that the noise isn't actually harmful to the engine. Something about the gap causing the noise could be less than a mm ... I glazed over a bit after that ... O_O

Mine allegedly did it before I bought it (I never witnessed it). This could potentially be because it was sat around in a garage, just being turned on and off to move or clean etc. Before I took it they did a full oil change with oil approved by BMW. Had it a few weeks now and not heard any ticking at any point.

There are no recorded engine failures that I've heard about so it's not a major issue - just annoying if yours does it. You may well find a complete oil change will resolve it. Also - taking it for a long drive may help as well. As others have said - it seems that frequent usage for short periods is the most likely cause.

I know you've had plenty of replies but just to give you a bit of extra peace of mind, I've noticed mine making this ticking noise a few times. I thought something was seriously wrong. I've had mine about 18 months now and it still does it now and again. Mine has just had an Inspection II and nothing was mentioned by the garage either. Just another Z4 Gremlin I think. Just like the idle clutch chatter that a lot of our Zeds have!

As suggested, take it for a good drive (Italian Tune-Up) and engage Sport Mode :D

Hi there and welcome. :)

There are plenty of us here that run a shed to work and save the Zed for the weekend. I typically run an 80-100 mile round trip to the surf most weekends and the Zed loves it. Rest of the time I drive a £1500 shed. Zed sits in the garage, handbrake off and roof down. I haven't put it near a trickle charger in 5 years. The battery will go flat after around 3 weeks if the car is not run, due to the tracker. That has occurred twice.
It takes mine around 5-7 miles to warm up this time of year and I won't go past 4k rpm until it is showing 75degs on the temp.

So based on your low daily mileage, my recommend:- by a shed and enjoy your Zed at the weekend. :driving:

Not sure its wise to leave roof down. The handbook says roof should remain up when car not in use otherwise it can develop severe creasing.

I got an N52/3.0si a couple of months ago - a fabulous fun car, but, it started this after a couple of weeks. It was a bit of a worry for a few weeks while I did the research you've done. The previous owner was using the car every day for a good distance. It was dealer serviced just a couple of weeks before I bought the car.
Now its being used at most for a couple of days a week for a 50+ mile round trip and some weeks not used except for a short distance. I do have to move it everyday just to shuffle cars around - they're always in the wrong order on the driveway. This clearly isn't helping.
A dose of Wynne's hydraulic valve lifter treatment has quietened it down enormously. I've seen 0W30 recommended too.
Something else to look for that caused me some concern for a few days. When I went to put the treatment in there was some emulsion in the oil filler cap - not a lot, a thin film, and none in the oil, but enough to cause some concern. Thankfully no oil in the water and neither level was dropping. Again, much research showed that short trips and just a few minutes running each day causes atmospheric moisture to get sucked into the oil. It needs to get properly hot for a while to drive off that moisture. Perfectly clear now. A perfect excuse to get out for a drive!

Just read this. Put my mind at rest as mine sounded a bit tappy this evening. Will just have to subject myself to some enthusiastic driving to tomorrow! :)

Had this for the first time the other day after a couple of short trips, disappeared after about a minute so I'm not overly worried. That and I've not heard of any dying because of it.

I really had no idea these suffered from this issue!

To the OP, the first thing I'd do would be to get the oil changed so you can be 100% sure it's got the correct stuff in it. At least that weight can be off your mind then.
