Roof motor failure - garage recommendation in Bristol?

Post by chadders1966 » Fri May 26, 2017 9:16 pm

Just spoke to the guy who sold it to me who said it had a new motor not so long ago. I put my hand in in and "waggled" all the cables and pulled and pushed the red Bowden cable thing - roof went down but wouldn't go back up. I then put the roof up manually, but it would go back down again. After a lot of random waggling and messing with the red Bowden cable thing I got it go down again, but not up!! Put it up again manually but can't get it to go down again. So I guess it is not the motor maybe a sensor or the cable, or a loose connection? :headbang:

Sorry Guys, I've only just caught up on this thread.

Yes I'm in North Bristol and am happy to relocate your motors. Usually on a Sat or Sunday morning works for me.

Drop me a PM (that goes for anyone) and we'll exchange phone numbers to talk about it.

Update, Alan has relocated motor into boot, see photos. What a top bloke, faultless service, can't recommend highly enough!!! Dropped off car in the morning, updates with photos sent, finished by lunchtime and even offered to drop me at work! Work undertaken to a very high standard as can be seen from photos :D

These are the typical photos obtained during a roof motor extraction

The rusty motor coming out

The muck trapped inside the housing where the motor lives

The Motor relocated to a perrmanently dry spot in the corner of the boot, revived, cleaned up and working again

And a false panel to hide it all away, but leaving it easily accessible for change or servicing

Roof motor failure - garage recommendation in Bristol?

Post by Benjamin547 » Tue May 18, 2021 1:36 am

Hi. I’m new to the forum and have had a similar problem with my e85 Z4... owned it for 1 day, and then the roof slowed down to a grinding halt :(

I’m in Bristol - so if you could offer any help (willing to pay of course), I’d be grateful.

Thanks - Ben

Dont know if FORZA Uk do roofs but I used them to get the Steering angle sensor changed and although I could have done it thier rates were very good. ( £70 fitted) I supplied the new SAS.
They specialize in BM and know their way around Z4 - Worth a try -https://www.forzagb.com/
I replaced a roof motor myseld on our first Z4 - took the roof off to do it - if you are a new owner may I suggest you buy a simple fault diagnosis tool like an icarsoft, you are bound to need it at some point to reset warning lights and check fault codes. Both our Z4s have lit up a few times!
