Power fold side mirror gets stuck in up position and won't go down

Post by z4all » Thu May 19, 2016 7:54 pm

Once folded up (using the button for electric folding) it doesn't want to come back down. It's stuck in the up position.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Bit more diagnostic info might help the more technically minded folks that might be able to help?

Both mirrors or just one side?
Can you hear any motors running when you press the button?
What happened the last time they folded up - anything unusual?
If both sides, have you checked out the fuse?

Just the passenger side one.

When pressing the button to get it down again, no can't hear anything.

Nothing unusual when folding up ever.

Exactly the same thing has happened to mine.

I can catch it half way and unfold the mirror again, but as soon as it has gone fully up, it wont come back down again

I took mine off, removed the mirror cover and then submerged it in a bucket of hot soapy water (well I was washing the car anyway). Gave it a good scrub as it was filthy - probably the best part of a decades worth of grime. And left it to dry before spraying some of my chain lube on it (motorbike stuff).

Back on the car and working again. I pumped more lube in and operated the fold unfold button a few times to get the lubricant as far into the motor mechanism as I could.

I'll probably do the same again this summer

Yeah pretty easy. Depends how far you want to go, you could take the whole thing off if you wanted. But probably better left in situ.
If you're taking it off in situ, the mirror comes off (that's kind of complicated if you've never done it - theres a guide somewhere). Then some screws come out of the bottom and middle section of the mirror cover. This means the cover (2 sections) comes off and you've got access to the main body of the "mirror". It's actually quite complex to explain!

I'll repeat over the summer and take some pics then :)

Is there a way to open up a gap so that you can spray some lube into the right place?

Maybe? If you undo the black part of the mirror cover (at the bottom so long as you've not folded it). I think it's just one screw. You want to lubricate the section that rotates, so if you get somone to powerfold it, so you can see where it's pivoting then you know where to spray. I'm not sure this will be sufficient... i.e. You probably should remove it completely to get unrestricted access, but it's better than no lubricant at all!

Same thing has just happened to mine! Was all working fine but suddenly the drivers side doesn't move at all, no motor noise, nothing! I've also noticed that the heated mirror isn't working but the mirror tilt does? I've checked the fuses and they're all fine. (Passenger side all works fine.)
Kis, when you say you took yours off do you mean dismantling the wing mirror assembly itself while still on the car, or removing the entire wing mirror from the door?

When I originally did mine I wanted to inspect everything. So I took it off, that involved taking off the whole door card. There are 2 or 3 bolts behind the little tweeter you need to take them out and the cable runs down inside the door so had to take the card off!

If it's still working I'd say you can do it in situ but you need to remove mirror, black mirror cover and the colour coded mirror cover sections. Then clean and re-lubricate.

If it's not working then you need to try revive the motor. I've heard soaking in diesel should do the trick... so if all else fails then leave it in a bucket overnight...

Like I said I'll do mine again at some point... so can post pics then. If you want tho it's straight forward
