That's nothing to do with the flat ends. It's the material and temper of the Spring unit.
Broken springs tend to show a typical stress fracture normally just after the first coil.

In reality its not that simple:-

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

I've replaced all the springs on my E85 03 plate with thicker after market sports springs. The previous owner had told me he replaced the two rear springs. I had put the car away perfect for the winter and on getting it out the garage, the f/n/s snapped. Decided then to replace all. OEM's are very thin and fickle.

Having gone through the service history on my 2008/57 3.0si Sport, both rear spring were replaced separately (so presumably once they had broken) after less than 2 years/20k miles.

Looking through the service history of mine it's had 3 new springs on the rear, all done by the BMW main dealer where it was bought and serviced.

I decided to stick Eibachs on it and the first thing I noticed was that they'd fitted the latest OEM spring upside down. I wonder if this is incompetence (most likely) or if they've perhaps found that the springs don't snap as easily when fitted the wrong way up :|

Both springs fractured, being replaced for the second time in the cars life, otherwise MOT fail. Not bad for just under 40k miles!!!! BMW still refusing to acknowledge that this is an issue with a large number of our Z's.

OSR spring found to be broken in usual place at just under 30k miles - 2004 3.0SE - replaced both rear springs with non OEM thicker springs.

I don't think it's a Z4 issue - I've had broken helical springs on Audi, Saab, Vauxhall and Mercedes !

I take your point. However I consider in my case, replacing the rear springs twice in under 40k miles to be excessive, and judging by the amount of debate on this particular thread, plenty of people agree.

Yep, twice in the last couple of years. Failed MOT last time because of broken spring.
