Wheel arch covers

Having recently replaced the headlamp bulbs on my coupe, I noticed the general poor fit of these access covers and that wet/dirt gets inside the covers which is not ideal. When I come to put them back on, they are now even more of a poor fit than before, with one in particular having 2-3mm gap between it and the wheel arch.
Rather than just get new covers which will probably just do the same, I was wondering if anyone tried putting some kind of sealant around them instead ( maybe non-drying gutter sealant?), to keep water and muck out?

There are s many vents and gaps at the front I would not be concerned with the poor fit of the access covers.
Just drive it and enjoy it
