Abs light and handbrake light, consistently orange
Hi, I'm a new member so excuse my ignorance! I bought a z4 on Sunday from a private seller and when I bought it he mentioned that there were a couple of service lights which come up purely because it hasn't been used. He told me he went to BMW and they just reset these!
He had rarely driven the car, I will be driving this everyday to work and at the moment I have the abs and handbrake light continuously orange and will not disappear!
Can anyone give me a definite answer, can I wait a couple of days to see if they disappear?
Also the rear window defroster button doesn't work, no lights appear on it when pressed, what's this issue?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome to the forum.
Got any more pics of your car? We like pictures.
It could be many things. Ideally you need to plug it in before spending any money on it. Get yourself a scanner. There are plenty of people on here who have bought their own and will be able to recommend what to get. They don't cost much and will become your most useful tool.
Is yours a roadster or a coupe? If coupe then a little red light should show on the button but I don't know about the roadsters so I'm sure someone else will comment on that too.

If the car had indeed been seen by a main dealer then there should be a receipt for this. Hopefully both rear tyres have been replaced but my first thought would be to try a simple battery disconnect to see if the lights are staying on. If this doesn't work then its garage time. Remember the ABS and DSC is not working so be carefull.

I shall try a simple battery disconnect and see if that makes a difference

Just had just the same lights ,came on on way to BMW Dealer for MOT ,an instant fail and is most likely your DSC unit has failed, mine had.
BMW Dealers do not reset these lights they are a critical safety devices .....ABS and DSC

I would advise that you take Z to a BMW Dealer and get them to diagnose the Fault codes .If as I suspect it is the DSC unit my Dealer quoted 2K+ for a new replacement .I took mine to a respected Indie in West Sussex and they removed the unit and had it refurbished and reinstalled all for £500
Took it back to my Dealer and they did a free retest all is now well

No one can give a definit answer without some diagnostics.Charlie1100 wrote: Can anyone give me a definite answer, can I wait a couple of days to see if they disappear?
Get yourself a $ 2,72 bluetooth OBD2 dongle
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELM327-OBD2-II- ... 2322925687
(yes, that includes shipping...)
And the free android 'torque-lite' app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... torquefree
And you can read and reset 99% of all engine codes.
ABS/DSC light can mean a 50 quid sensor or a 1500 quid ABS module. No telling without the codes.
As long as these lights are on your ABS and ESP might not work.

I'm really hoping it's just the sensor! Only time will tell!

Drive carefully until you get it sorted ,technically "unroadworthy" and if presented for an MOT would fail immediately and as already indicated elsewhere there is no ABS or stability control with the lights showing
This is a well known issue with these models and also the 3 series that share similar mechanicals

I'm gonna get an Obd2 reader and the app for iPhone and see what happens!
The rear window should be a fuse

Did you get sizeable reduction in the price when you bought the z,if not you want to go back and ask for some monies back.Charlie1100 wrote:I'm gonna get an Obd2 reader and the app for iPhone and see what happens!

Yep hopefully the rear window is an easier one, it was a private seller but we got £150 off the listed price, guess I've got to play the waiting game.maxman wrote:Did you get sizeable reduction in the price when you bought the z,if not you want to go back and ask for some monies back.Charlie1100 wrote:I'm gonna get an Obd2 reader and the app for iPhone and see what happens!

Thing is as well It passed the MOT in September and the guy has done about 200 miles since, he said I could give him a ring if I had any issues, I'm sure he wasn't aware (benefit of the doubt)

I have the same lights on the dash, with codes "5DF0-Hydraulic unit pump motor” and “5DF1-Hydraulic unit pump motor connector faulty". I have a garage saying that in their experience it is 99% the control unit attached to the side of the ABS/DSC pump, which can be repaired.Charlie1100 wrote:Yep hopefully the rear window is an easier one, it was a private seller but we got £150 off the listed price, guess I've got to play the waiting game.maxman wrote:Did you get sizeable reduction in the price when you bought the z,if not you want to go back and ask for some monies back.Charlie1100 wrote:I'm gonna get an Obd2 reader and the app for iPhone and see what happens!

However, youtube search shows 5DF0, 5DF1 as a common pump fault (stuck brushes in the motor). So, Jury's out at this time.
Will be interested to see what fault codes you get, and what fixes it for your unit.
Good luck.
