Broke my Z4 already. Some help with error codes pls.

Post by Tomsdad » Tue Apr 11, 2017 4:49 pm

So I live in Cambridge and the car was advertised north of Glasgow. Took easy jet, viewed the car, bought it and drove nearly 400 miles back home through the early hours. It didn't miss a beat.
Now I've broken it after 5 days.
I was just going to BMW to get oil and air filter. Thought I would check condition of old filter first. So I undid the clips lifted the air box top away and removed the filter. Wasn't too bad but when BMW only wanted Β£17 for a new one thought I would change it anyway.
I digress.
Engine management light has come on on the way to the dealers.
I plugged the code reader in and read the codes.
1 hard code of P1554 don't know what that is
Multiple pending codes of P 0174 which is running lean.
So logic said that I messed up with the air filter. But surely there is only 1 way to put the filter in???
So I have now taken the air box lid right off and made sure the new filter is seated correctly.
Cleared the codes which turned the management light off. But I'm shitting myself that it will come on again.

Any thoughts

Kind regards

Did you disconnect the MAF at all?

No. Just undid the clips and pulled lid up. Just enough room to take out and replace filter.
Been out for about 6-7 miles. Seems ok. But light didn't come on before till after about 15 miles.
Fingers crossed.

I'm not sure what you'd need to do to lift it enough to get a filter in and out but you might have put strain on the MAF connector even if you didn't disconnect it. I can't remember if the MAF is upstream or downstream of the filter. I'd check that connection anyway as changing the filter on its own shouldn't cause a problem

Was the engine off when you did this?

Might of opened up a split in the intake tube (can't remember it's exact name) between the MAF and the manifold, common fault.

Yup that's what I'm on about

Worth checking if all you've done is change the air filter as this would of disturbed this pipe.

Looks like the op has an si which doesn't have the bifurcated pipe which is prone to splitting :?

Dont panic Mr Mainwarring!!!
Exactly what happened to me when I bought my 3.0!
Did a complete service, oils, filters the lot, took her out for a long run EML came on.
'Lean bank' code came up. Cleared the code & she was fine on short trips [up to 20 miles] but any longer trips the EML tripped again.
Take the air filter housing off, there's a large pipe from the air cleaner to the EGR valve & off this large pipe is a little concertina pipe, bet you that has a crack in it & all you've done is disturbed the pipe while changing the filter.

Thanks everyone. I will check this later today.
As a side issue. My knowledge of OBD error reading is limited. Would I be right in thinking that an error (what I think off as a hard error) trips the EML light but pending error codes just get logged. But if a pending code keeps on logging is there a threshold that will trip the EML light?

It's all by the by really but I find it interesting.

Update
First off after driving 7 miles it has logged no error codes. Not sure if this means anything.
Secondly I have removed what I think is the concertina pipe that Fox889 refers to.
Is this the part? Seems in good order to me although it is difficult to inspect the underside of the concertina pipe because you can't see it. The small concertina pipe does not seem to be removable.

Update.
Put everything back together and fingers crossed went for a drive.
Tick over was a bit lumpy. At fIrst t junction actually stalled.
On start up from hot or cold ticker is a bit lumpy and initially fluctuates from 500- 1100 then settles down. Engine feels unbalanced while tick over fluctuates.
After 15 miles engine management light came on. This time slightly different codes.
P1415 and pending code P0171
Grateful for any help.

It all sounds like a vacuum leak and they can be a bitch to find.

Double check any pipes you touched or loosened and make sure there all good.

If you can't find the culprit try the soapy water trick. Get a spray bottle with washing up liquid and water in and spray around the pipes with the engine running. Hopefully when you spray you should hear the engine idle better as the soap momentarily seals any gap.

Good luck
