Door mirror decides to leave

Post by Tomsdad » Thu Apr 13, 2017 7:05 pm

Driving along I notice the drivers door mirror seemed to be wobbling. Lowered the window, but befor I could touch it, the glass flew out.
The actual glass seems to have parted company with the backing plate which I think it is bonded onto. The black backing plate is still there.
Dealer wants £125 just for the glass!!!
So it's true that BMW means break my wallet.

Are replacements easy to fit?

Regards

Mine got off today - I've also started a thread about it.

I was looking at this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Left-Passenge ... Sw1DtXGNql

bit cheaper than BMW dealer prices

So do we want
Flat or wide angle or covex?
Heated?
How do I tell what I have on the car?

I'd go with heated and convex. Flat is down right shite.

I assume yours is heated too. Start the car for a minute and touch the other mirror. Zed mirrors run 'hot' all the time. So if you've got heated you'll know.

Bit of a PITA to remove the glass as well there is a little notch that you have to twist anti clockwise. Do a quick search, google prob your best bet. There are images as guide.

Also might as well replace both and leave the passenger one as a spare. That way the glass is the same and it won't mess with your vision or anything.

Give me a shout if you can't find the guides to remove the mirror, I've got them on the laptop.

Happened to me on Friday. Seems a common issue on zeds. Paid less than £110 at BMW inc. VAT. Give them your reg. number and they'll tell you what you have, usual is wide angle with blind spot corner separated by a vertical line and heated.
Currently zedless :(

Interesting that they are heated all the time. Maybe that weakens the bonding of the adhesive causing them to part company.

Yeah maybe heat had a factor. Getting on for 10 years old, so I'd say prob been replaced once already? Which may be why it parted? OEM quality is generally quite good in comparison to aftermarket. But too much to pay for in comparison...

Mine came off over the weekend. It seems I've pleased the gods as it hit the Tarmac and was 100% chip, scratch and crack free. Just gorilla glue required.
