Alarm going off after locked

Post by Tcochrane92 » Sun May 14, 2017 3:55 pm

So my Coupés alarm has gone off a few times randomly.

Typical scenario, is drive it somewhere, park, lock, within 5 mins the alarm is going off. No apparent trigger, happens in various places and no pattern

Any ideas what could be causing it?

Battery?

Unplug the bonnet opening switch at the bottom of the windscreen and see if it stops.

Replace if so.

As above, new is less than £15 from BMW. If that doesn't do it then battery is next step to check

Also can be change left in the handbrake / centre console area. I know it sounds silly! Something to do with the internal sensors and getting a reflection thinking theres a presence in the car while its locked...

No change in the centre console area, not rich enough to just have money lying around :P

Since disconnecting the bonnet switch, the alarm hasn't been triggered yet... so will give it a week and if it doesn't go off again, I'll get a new bonnet switch!

Happy days, sounds like it is that if it was doing it only a few mins after locking and it hasn't since.

I never bothered replacing the switch, all it does us tells you the bonnet is shut, I figured with the size of the bonnet if I don't notice it's not shut I deserve the consequences

I don't agree, the bonnet can be popped open and held with the release catch only and still activate the sensor, so it's use is really for the alarm. If you don't want bonnet alarm coverage then don't replace and/or code out.

i had same issue and it was the battery giving sensors false readings. i got a top of the line battery after that. previous owner had some tiny cheap small battery in it.

I have just emailed BMW asking them to justify almost £40 for a component that would have moved no more than 500 times in its 10 year life (that's at opening the bonnet once a week)

I bet BMW pay under £1 for that part.
