Strange steering at 70-80mph

Post by Rob_benton » Mon May 15, 2017 11:36 pm

Hi

When traveling on a private road at 70-80mph the steering wheel wants to wander left and right gentle just a couple of degrees.

It's recently had non runflats fitted and a seized passenger front calliper replaced . The strange steering feel has only just started happening, so a few miles after the work.
My local garage has checked all the bushes and say it's fine.
The car has 82k on the clock.
It's not balancing as it's not shaking.
And it's on different road surfaces.

I'm going to get under the car with the mechanic and check the bushes with him.

Has anyone else experienced this before ?
Cheers

What kind of tyres did you put on? can make all the difference even though theyre new.
tramlining/wayward steering is apparently quite a common phenomenon, at least for the E85's.
Mine is a bit jittery at motorway speeds with it's original 18" summer wheel/tyres but it was as straight as a die and as smooth as silk with its tall-profile, square setup 16" winter wheels!
I was loathed to go back to the summers and left it as late as only last month!

I have Rainsports all round. Strange thing is, it didn't do it for the first 1,000 miles.
I've tried different pressures too and it makes no difference.

It's a tangled web, surounded by a mystery, wrapped up in an enigma
Good luck with trying to fix it.
I've gone another direction by learning to 'embrace' it as I know it will just frustrate me in expending the effort and expense in trying various things just to end up with possibly a worse situation as others here have experienced. In my case it's def tyre/wheel-related due to the winter wheel experience. So maybe a new set of wheels/tyres will solve it. I doubt it tho

It was done around 4,000 miles ago but a local garage.
If I can't find anything wrong, I'll take it to an alignment specialist.
